Loved it, but was this even possible? (spoilers!!!)

Loved the movie, when i compare this to many other disaster movies..especially from America...nah, can't even compare. But if i understand correctly..they blew big holes in the sea-bed's crust...so that the water leaves and the sinking of Japan...basically stops? I watched this with english subtitles and most of the time i am used to my own language, dutch. So it can be that i missed a few things.
But if i got that correct....is that even possible?

i found this movie late last night on youtube, and watched it right through!!

AWESOME MOVIE

(SPOILERS)

anyway, it was explained in the middle of the movie by using a newspaper with plates on it, and the girl was asked by the scientist to pull the paper hard. but first he punched some holes in the newspaper and then she pulled it hard ..... and the paper ripped leaving the plates on the table!

so the whole thing goes tits up at first, but happily (DAMMIT) it goes right for a change, and the explosives let rip (very good effects BTW, as in all through the movie) as they PUNCH holes in the earth's crust for hundreds of miles, so brekaing the actual tectonic plate and stopped what's left of japan sinking into the earth!!!

GREAT movie with superlative acting and fantastic SFX
