The Goats

I finished reading Shake Hands with the Devil the day before I went to see the movie, and I'm glad to see they kept in the anecdote involving the goats. In a way, I see it as the film's climax, and when Dallaire realizes his gun is empty and turns around to see his troops silent but all thinking the same thing, the power hits you. Even more so when you realize it wasn't a scene invented for dramatic effect but a true-to-life event, as small as it was.

Honestly the best movie I've seen this year. Maybe No Country for Old Men might top it, but as of now I'm rating this as an excellent film.

I have to say, I would have done the exact same thing in his place. I haven't read the book yet, so I looked at this situation in two ways:

1. When he originally got the goats, he said they were something to keep alive and shooting the dogs did that.

2. He could not use his weapon against those who were murdering innocent people so he used it against the dogs (as a poor substitute).

Either way, when that occurred, I thought "Time to go home."
