Oscars

I just saw this film and thought it was excellent. I was just wondering-would this film be classified as best foreign film if it was nominated for an oscar (which it should be)? Or would it be in the best picture category? I'm just not sure since it is a Canadian film if it would be considered by the Academy to be "foreign".

reply

I hope it wins or nabs a nod for next years Oscars or the Genies (Canada's Oscar) It must be a great film I wish I could SEE IT!!!!!!

reply

As far as I know, the Oscar is for `Best Foreign Language Film`, so I don`t know if Shake Hands with the Devil is up for that. Although Pan`s Labyrinth was nominated for last years Oscar, so maybe it is possible.

reply

Maybe because Pan's Labrynth is entirely in Spanish...?

reply

I think a film to be nominated for Best Foreign Film must be in a language other
than English. This film had both English and French in it. I dont know what percentage must be non English.

reply

It won't qualify. It has too much English.

Although who knows if the marketing team does a good enough job it could snag a nomination (Cinematography, Adapted Screenplay). I belive it does not have the power to grab any though, just because it's a small budget cdn hero film based in Africa.

Excellent movie and deserves an Oscar

Politics would never have allowed this movie to receive an Oscar. All of this occurred during the Clinton years. His administration did nothing about it. After after his failure in Somalia, he decided to ignore all that happened in Rwanda.
In the US, Shake Hands with the Devil never received the attention it so richly deserved. Hollywood is liberal...Hollywood supported Clinton...Hollywood saw the failure of Clinton, but chose to ignore it, and Rwanda...Hollywood moved on to the next 'cause celebre.'

And before anyone tries to write about 'Hotel Rwanda,' if was a fine movie, yet it was politically watered down.....unless I missed the parts of how the US did nothing to prevent or halt the genocide.

I recently saw this movie and Roy Dupuis did a marvelous job and is probably on of the best actors around, Canadian or otherwise.
Some people comment about him moving to the US to become more popular but I respect that he doesn't feel the need to glom onto the American Movie Machine and do crappy, forgetful movies for more money.
He's been memorable in every movie I've seen him in.
