They didn't seem to work very well. Bai Ling didn't get noticeably younger. Perhaps it was some sort of comment on vanity and how women delude themselves?

Yes dear. Everyone said that the ex-tv actress was a lot younger but she didn't look particularly younger.
shareYou meant Miriam Yeung not Bai Ling. Bai Ling played a 60+ year old.
But as for Miriam's character, she had only just started eating the stuff so we probably wouldn't of seen the changes much, whereas Bai Ling's character has been eating them for half her life I suppose.

shareThis doesn't actually prove that it wasn't all an elaborate scam and that Aunt Mei wasn't a 30-something con artist claiming to be a 60-year-old witch. The only "proof" we ever see of her claim is the picture on the wall.
