The scene where the police were searching Aunt Mei's apartment was shortly after the police were at the dead teen's apartment. Therefore, I had assumed the police had made the connection from the family to Aunt Mei. The mother tried to stab the father to death because the daughter died from the abortion Aunt Mei gave her.
For the last question, I think it just implied Aunt Mei had been doing this for many years. She was a traveler. She roamed.
Clearly the mother of the teen sold out Mei to the cops after her daughter died, Mrs. Li was calling to try and get Mei to help her again but when the cop answers Mei's phone she hangs up and figures out another way.

But I see that as a way of storytelling to show how Aunt Mei has got and is going to get further profited from a young girl's life when the wealthy Mr. Li comes looking for Mei and her dumplings, and how Mei's customers are also her accomplices and responsible for the evil that comes from eating aborted fetuses.
When the police is searching Mei's apartment, I believe the call from Mrs. Li is just a last attempt to get more of Mei's products, btw which is very stupid as she can see the police in the apartment. It is more likely that Mei saw on the news that the young girl's mother had tried to kill her husband for raping and inadvertently causing the girl to die after the abortion. So Mei escaped before the police came looking for her. She somehow crossed the border and went back to China. As she has become a fugitive in the end, she can no longer dress herself properly or even find a job, and has become a poor hawker.
