The killing of the 'religious' grotesque

What I could not understand about this segment of the film was why the hell a 'preacher' or 'messiah' or whatever he considered himself would have a virtual army that didn't actually protect him but waited in the wings until he was killed.

I could understand someone like him having a lot of protection but why they should all go ape and risk death and possible criminal charges when their source of income no longer existed is a mystery.

Not to mention the fact that there were so many of them they could not have all reliably identified each other and were thus essentially firing at whomever came into their sights.

I know you shouldn't bother about logical inconsistencies in films like this but sometimes they just get way out of hand.
