pop'tart

i've never been a big fan of the pop art movement of the late '60s, but i do like this documentary. it places an important american art movement in proper perspective for those of us who weren't around back then (as well as those of us who were). because, like one of the artists interviewed in it says, "we didn't know that what we were doin' was important in any way. we just knew we had to do it...and did it."
it does draw its inspiration from (and it focusses on) the new york art scene only; but that was a happenin' enough scene to give this doc plenty of material to work with. just the metropolitan museum and its curator/organiser - the centerpieces of the film - saw enough key faces and moments to make the movie about a half-hour longer without making it overlong.
