what the hell?

why the hell is it ok for blacks to play a character of a white person but for a white person to play a role of a black person never happens, because they say that would be racist.

the originalcharacter for this movie was created white so it should stay white, this happens in alot of movies and its *beep*

Does it actually say in the book that he's white?

Besides, this is a modernisation.

I can't believe here in 2006-2007 we're talking about stuff like this. Is it really important? I have yet to see the film, but I know Tony Todd is a decent actor. This part would definately give him a chance to "stretch his legs" as an actor. I can't wait to see it!

Tony Todd is a great actor. Every role he does, you absolutely believe he is that character. He isn't like Tom Cruise & Harrison Ford basically playing the same character over and over again in different movies. A prime example of the depth he can bring to a role can be seen in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode called The Visitor. I just saw this movie posted here and will watch it the second I can get my hands on the DVD. I checked Amazon and it does not appear to be on sale yet so I'll swing by Blockbuster later to see it it's out for rental.
As for the crack made by the O.P. about switching races for roles, Patrick Stewart played a white Othello with an otherwise all-black cast and got great reviews. Check the NYT review of the play on 11/21/1997.

I'd take a good black actor over a bad white actor any day. Why whine about what color he is when he's a great actor? As long as he plays the part (parts?)well (which he does), it shouldn't matter.

Absolutely.

The original novella is neither about black or white issues, it is about the dichotomy of good and evil which resides within us all. This film explores that, as did the original version of the first film. Black actor, white actor, it makes no difference. Todd here is excellent in both roles.

At no point in this movie is anyone in white or black face, so your question is moot. Everyone's playing their natural race.

They did do that with Bernie Casey in Dr. Black and Mr. Hyde (1976). Atlthough the "White" Mr. Hyde was really just Bernie Casey wearing unconvincing white powder makeup. His hair was still Afro style even in his transformed form so it was laughable that the other characters seemed think his "Hyde" was a white man.
