Terrible Film
This movie was not "The Smurfs". It in no way stuck true to the original series. First of all, why did they need to make up a new smurf and add him to their group? All Gutsy smurf is is a Scottish stereotype. There is nothing unique or funny about him. There are plenty of other original smurfs that they could have used instead. Dreamy Smurf would have been perfect for the role!
And the character portrayl was just terrible! Not once in the movie did Grumpy Smurf mutter his signature catch phrase, " I hate.......".
They got Clumsy Smurf all wrong, and Brainy Smurf never once in the movie acted arrogant to the rest of the Smurfs. The whole plot has been done a thousand times! The classic " fish out of water" story. It was fine in Enchanted, but after that movie it seemed like every childrens movie used the same template.
The fact that the sequel is taking place in New York again is ridiculous! They could make an entertaining movie without having to rely on casting modern day humans in the film. That would be like going to watch a Muppet film just for the humans.
The Smurfs are beloved childhood characters, but some way down the road they became a sub culture. They deserve to be introduced to a new generation, but at the same time they should stick true to the original series, because thats what made the Smurfs great in the first place. Changing it to something totally different does not make it the same. Obviously all the studio cared about was making money off this film, instead of actually making it good. Children deserve to watch something better.
