You can't criticize this movie

To anybody that says you can't criticize The Smurfs because it's aimed at children, you are everything that is wrong with modern movie making, I've seen a few topics and posts within topics that use this excuse to defend this trash and quite frankly it's the single most feeble, absent minded excuse you can use, it's the exact same excuse people use to defend movies like Transformers saying "It's a popcorn flick what did you expect?", just because a movie is aimed at children doesn't mean it's exempt from all negative feed back, if that were the case we wouldn't have amazing children's movies that can also be enjoyed by adults, like The Lion King, Toy Story, A Nightmare Before Christmas and Home Alone, if they were all free from criticism then they wouldn't have put the time and effort into them to make them the classics they have become, they would just be a barage of lame jokes, forgettable characters and a sign at the end saying "Hey at least the pretty colours kept your kids amused for an hour!".

All movies must be held to the same standard of quality otherwise we get The Smurfs, the epitome of laziness, bad CGI, bad jokes, plots that start then either lead nowhere or just disappear altogether and actors that genuinely look like they know what they're doing is an abomination to cinema.

Sure this may make a quick buck now, and this quick buck may warrant a sequel, but I will bet my life that this movie will have absolutely no impact on anyone.

Except movies like transformers (first one of course) had substance and style, this smurfs movie has none of that, it is an utter and absolute disgrace to not only the comic strip, but the cartoon series from the 80's as well, it is utterly shameful, truly is and what's even worse, some person from this message board have the nerve to say that this piece of trashy junk is better than avatar, well guess what, this junk will never and I Mean never be as good as the james cameron film, cameron did it with class, style and talent, this trashy idiotic movie has none of the talent, Truly horrible CGI, Everything about it was just absolutely horrible, just shameful.

Not Only one of the worst movies of the decade, but one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Transformers has substance & style? Really? LOL

It will only have impact on the execs who smell a quick buck.
I agree wholeheartedly, just because it's for children, doesn't mean it has to be crap.

Thank you! I tried to make that very point in another thread. Just because something is made for kids doesn't give it a pass on being a bad movie. What if the respective creators of The Lion King, The Neverending Story, ET, and most of the Pixar movies had taken the "it's-for-kids-so-who-cares-if-it-sucks" attitude?

The more people I meet, the more I get why Jane Goodall spends all of her time with chimps.....

I've never seen anyone say that you can't criticize a film period because it's a kids' film, or a "popcorn film", or anything like that. What they're saying--and they're almost always on target--is that folks are criticizing them per criteria that are not appropriate for kids' films, "popcorn films", etc.

I like this movie because it is good. It has nothing to do with "excuses" or "aimed at kids"
This movie is funny, cute, well made and overall a good viewing.

"All movies must be held to the same standard of quality"
NO. Every single movie should be viewed IN ITS OWN PREMISE.
If you really follow this, there will be NO movie left to enjoy.
"you are everything that is wrong with modern movie making"
How ironic.

I agree with you. I like Smurfs and Smurfs II. People love to trash movies with general terms. Wish they would/could provide specifics to go with those general criticisms. Sometimes I wonder if they can.

Actors do not have a job...they have a blast!

I think you can criticize it if you like but I liked it. It is funnier than any Adam Sandler movie and it was cute. I am an adult who watched The Smurfs as a kid and I was entertained by this movie.

While I personally did not enjoy "The Smurfs" at all, I whole-heartedly agree with you that compared to ANY Adam Sandler movie, it is like an Oscar winner! Seriously, that guy is so full of sh*t and consequently his movies are full of sh*t.

Mr McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry!
