chess discontinuity??

max starts off as black but then after he says 'well beating you at chess' he moves the white queen to knock off the black queen. was he being sarcastic and moving for penelope? but then penelope says 'you're queen WILL be dead' as if max's queen is still alive...
can anyone explain wt happens in their game?

He's playing for both of them. She can't reach through the glass to play for herself. She tells him what to move for her and he does.
