All 3 major members of Penelope's family are played by people who have worked with Tim Burton.

Christina Ricci (Sleepy Hollow)
Catherine O' Hara (Beetlejuice, Nightmare Before Christmas)
Richard Grant (Corpse Bride)

I guess they thought getting actors who have worked with him would help with the fairy tale tone of this.

Me too...if tim burton did light happy shiny movies, this would be it. Very much with the whimsy.

I agree. Big Fish was pretty bright and happy though.

It's down to the casting director, someone who has worked on Burton films a few times. She clearly likes to hire the same people.
