I just wonder

When the flick was over, there was a hypothetical scenario I just couldn't shake, and that was - what would REALLY happen to someone who did what those two mafia bozos did at the end of the film with the 100 grams of granulated plutonium isotope? Personally, I can't even imagine the result.

I didn't see that coming at all. My God. Their brains would have been literally fried, within minutes, or possibly within seconds... Can anyone with a medical background post their thoughts here?

reply

I'm dying to know as well!

reply

luckily for them, they'd die before the worst happened.

That entire hotel/lobby and the clerk in the background would be in a world of hurt.

reply

As would all the employees and guests of the hotel and anyone entering the lobby until the authorities figure out what happened and evacuate the building.

that whole area would be *beep* imagine all the people who would be examing the bodies before they realized they snorted a line of plutonium.. and all the people who just walk bye and out of the hotel on to the streets.. wow. crazy *beep* movie..

take this quote in mind when thinking about that lol.

Timofey: Are you aware of the radiological effects on living organisms? Protons cut through your DNA rewriting your genetic code. The instructions for teeth become the recipe for cancer. Your marrow dies inside your bones taking with it your immune system. The next coughing person will become an infection, the smoke from your cigarette becomes lethal as a bullet. A thousandth of a gram can change a life.

"A thousandth of a gram can change a life"

LOL and those two bozos were doing 100grams of it !

at an exposure of 50000 REMs you most likely die in a couple of hours. but sniffing pure plutonium is waaaaaay stronger than a "simple" exposure to radiation. in my opinion they would die in a couple of seconds, their brains and internal organs would most probably melt instantly.
and for the area that should be evacuated...i guess about 1 km.

I was thinking about the volume of people who would be affected as well. Anyone who got near Timofey for an extended amount of time was in trouble. Those two guys...

I'm actually wondering if realistically they'd even have a chance of lining it up and snorting it before becoming violently ill. I'd expect seconds after the canister was opened and it spilled-out, but I'm no expert. That would've ruined the sort of black-comedic ending, too.

People who have been irradiated are not radioactive themselves.

I don't remember exactly, but I thought there was some real concern for his family members. Wasn't he wary of kissing his wife right before he left?

I have read somewhere that 5 GRAMS of plutonium can erase the entire human race. Besides, as plutonium is such a highly radioactive and lethal substance, an experienced nuclear facility clerk is not likely to steal 100 GRAMS of it and put them all in a small lead container. the two people who drug-used the Pu, they should've been very dead after they inhaled the pu.

i think a dude who worked with the stuff for a living... would be able to steal it fairly easily in that country if he some how had a reason to steal it. we just expect the people who work with that stuff to not do something like that. and would expect that something of that nature would be impossible to steal.

I know a case in a private processing facility where a guy poured an enriched uranium solution into a big mixer that allowed all the particles to come too close together so that they formed a criticality. his arm he used to turn off the machine (and stop the reaction) swole up to several sizes larger. his flesh became highly radioactive so much that his hospital room had leaded glass through which his family could watch him die over the course of 2 days. his coffin was lead and he was buried in a nuclear waste dump along with every item from the accident area and the hospital...even the change in the pocket of some guy who ran in to help.

I could imagine the effect of snorting enriched plutonium (the most toxic poison known) to be similar.

"As an alpha emitter, plutonium-239 is not particularly dangerous as an external radiation source, but if it is ingested or breathed in as dust it is very dangerous and carcinogenic. It has been estimated that a pound (454 grams) of plutonium inhaled as plutonium oxide dust could give cancer to two million people"

From wikipedia. So if these guys snorted about say, quarter of a gram each... (I have never done drugs, so had to look up avg. dosage). That's enough to give over 1000 people cancer. Nuff said.
