In the restaurant scene ;
Houdini appears to like Mrs. McGarvey. He gives her a gift of earrings.
She takes them off and says "I'm not a wee girl. What is it you want?".
"I want to treat you as the lady you so clearly are" he says.
"That's all?" she says. He says "You're special. You have a gift"
The daughter's voiceover says "the truth was, she couldn't read him and she let him get under her skin".
Her daughter enters with Mr Sugarman.
Houdini makes his manager Mr Sugarman "acknowledge a lady". This makes her flustered.
She says "I don't have the time or the inclination to figure out what it is you really want so I'll just leave you and Mr Sugarman to your silly games". She leaves with her daughter.
I think she just can't make out whether Houdini is really sincere or is playing with her.
In the dance scene ;
Again he seems to be playacting. He keeps asking for the dance to change every few minutes.
She says "Is it Mrs Houdini who makes the soup?".
He says "Cook makes the soup. Mrs. Houdini serves it up. You'd like her".
She says "Can't see us washing dishes together".
He says "Maid does the dishes. Things change, Mary".
"I'm the great Houdini. I make things the way I want them to be"
She says "You can't". He says "Oh, I can, believe me"
She says "Stop it. This is real. I'm real. What's happening to me?"
He says "You're dancing, Mary".
"Well I don't want to dance anymore"
She leaves.
Mr Sugarman gives daughter something. We find out it's Houdini's key.
Again I think Mary McGarvey leaves because she can't work out if Houdini is playing with her or is sincere.
"My will is strong but my won't is weak"
