Yeah! He murdered people! Brave!

What a brave man, murdering Russians. It's because the Russians are evil but Pakistanis are not. Evil evil Russians. They fight for communism and not because they need to feed their families with the 5 Rubels they earn.
Brave Charlie Wilson, he totally got it! Where is his medal, quick! Good man, spending money on the poor war industry, I wish I could donate to his projects because they are so humane.

so the russians had morality on their side?

they didn't kill afghans? they didn't invade afghanistan first.

didn't they start it?

didn't the russians due, and i am not exaggerating here, the EXACT same thing - proxy war - to the americans (and vietnamese in viet nam), first.

i'm confused, it's rare that i hear the soviets depicted as the good guys..i mean, not even the average soviet citizen was fond of the soviet gov't.

thanks for your reply..

Actually some who have the mentality above a slug like you care about them and all people. Did you ever think that you may have been born anywhere, including the ussr. Then someone over here could kill you and some jerk here could say we don't care about your sorry ass.

reply

Are you also upset that Eisenhower, Marshall, Macarthur, and Patton had to murder German and Japanese soldiers during WWII?

reply

Yes I am indeed.
It's how the world rolls but it doesn't meat it's supposed to be like that.

who says it's not supposed to be like that

since the dawn of time man has killed man...once there were enough people, they created armies..

this has been going on since day 1...

peace is the ABnormal...to walk into the discussion today, after around 5000 of recorded history, a history that recorded war after war up to and including today and say, 'it's not supposed to be that way' is, well, what's after 'naive'?

Charlie in the movie wasn't thrilled about killing Russians. Just a lot of people that were helping him were.

All that Charlie ever wanted was to get the Soviets out of the country (and afterwards to rebuild the country, but he never able to achieve that goal).

It's kind of interesting to compare what happened to what the overseas chief guy wanted. The overseas guy wanted to give the Afghans just enough support so that they could resist, but not enough support so that they could win. His end game was to "bleed" the Soviets. In a strange way he got it, but with the twist that the Afghans became heavily armed and trained in insurgency warfare. If the original plan had been left alone then the Soviets would have wasted a vast amount of resources for a minor victory/occupation and perhaps today we wouldn't have the whole "war on terror" thing going on. Of course, that's only an option if you don't care whether the Afghans die or not. If you care about Human life you'd follow the same path that Charlie did.

Your point of view can be classified as pure Idealism.

There are some sad realities in this world, it doesn't mean we have to like them, but they are there all the same.

Sadly, some conflicts can only be resolved through violence.

Would you have rather allowed the Russians to continue their campaign against Afghanistan? What non-violent solutions would you have suggested instead?

I suppose we could have turned a blind eye to the situation, much like we do in Africa.
But sometimes fire must be fought with fire.

Who was alive when the United States helped the Afghans? Anybody? Did you watch this film? Or did you turn it off midway through and go back to your Saturday morning cartoons?

reply

Good grief, if what Wilson did was 'helping' Afghans, then I sure would NOT want to be on the receiving end of what Wilson thought would be doing them harm.

A pacified Afghanistan or whatever other country, is a far better option for the inhabitants and all other players, than what the historical, still not completely played-out situation is now.

Wilson was an utter idiot with perhaps the best of intentions, but a fool nonetheless whose unintended consequences still plague the world now and moreover with no sign of resolution in sight.

Maybe sometime in the far future, historians will look back and be able to say: 'Hey, this a movie about one of the people responsible for the Second Hundred Years War'.
