Best film ever made?

Honestly, I feel like that is a valid question. I cannot imagine the dedication and skill it took to film this movie. It's pure genius. I cannot wait for Mel's WWII film in 2016.

I don't know if it's THE best film ever made. But, to me, it's undoubte one of the best films ever made. I know there is this stigma that any movie made in the 2000's (even when critically acclaimed) don't hold a candle to the golden age of cinema. But, Apocalypto is undeniably superb. As a modern film or otherwise. Another thing a lot of people tend to forget is that Apocalypto was extremely innovative when it was released because it was one of the only films that had ever been shot purely on digital cameras on that time. Now digital is common place obviously. My point is I think Apocalypto did a lot of things that I would constitute as a masterpiece: innovative technical aspects, focused narrative, great understanding of tone etc. it's a knock out

Objectively speaking, I don't know if any one movie can be given this label. I do think it's as great a movie that can be made. In my opinion it is in an elite class along with The Godfather, Mystic River, Chinatown, Zodiac, and several others. Too many to list here, but still a very small number relative to the overall amount of movies that have been made.

Nice! Mystic River and Zodiac are both absolutely brilliant! Couldn't agree more.

A PhD of history for Mayans was on a podcast that talks about historical accuracy of Apocalypto. He agreed with 99,5%; he said Mel was right on except for two tiny things. He LOVED the film too.

Here is what other film makers and stars thought via Wikipedia..

Director Quentin Tarantino said, "I think it's a masterpiece. It was perhaps the best film of that year. I think it was the best artistic film of that year."

Robert Duvall called it "maybe the best movie I've seen in 25 years."

Edward James Olmos said, "I was totally caught off guard. It's arguably the best movie I've seen in years. I was blown away."

In 2013, director Spike Lee put the film on his list of all-time essential films."

It's truly mesmerizing and pulls you into a whole other world and language.
The acting, cinematography, soundtrack = perfect.

Ive got a dozen or so films that I personally rate a perfect 10, rewatching this the other night I would up this from a 9 to a 10, it just doesn't put a foot wrong for my money. Its a truly stunning unique movie and a masterpiece in my opinion.

I agree. I truly feel it's one of the best films I've ever seen.

There is nothing like it imo. Everything about this film was perfect, acting, cinematography, editing, writing, sets, costumes which were in a class of their own, directing.

Mel is a flat-out genius.

well.......what were the 2 tiny things that were inaccurate?

The Exorcist edges it for me.

Lol goofball.

It's a decent film. It's a bit too brutal for my taste, but the scope and scale of the movie was very impressive.

reply

I give it a 9/10 mainly because I thought the spiritual/prophetic stuff was overplayed but aside from that it's flawless, beautifully constructed set pieces were the highlight and the fact that there's not much CGI used means the film will age gracefully. I'm not concerned with historical accuracy because the purpose of a a film is to entertain, if it is historically accurate then that's a bonus but by no means a necessity.

reply

I say it's probably the best I've ever seen. Can't believe I only got to see it 10 years after it was released.

Just saw it tonight myself. Great film. Violent, yes, but gorgeously shot and very enthralling!

I never even heard of it and it was on one day on hbo or something so I started watching it from the beginning., and it was pretty fking cool. Def top 50 all time. The only part I didn't care for was the pregnant lady in the well, and then she *beep* out a kid, kinda silly. lol, but none the less,. I loved the movie. brutally real. and I had no idea those ziggarauts were made for heads to roll down like that. and I had no idea where they were being taken, or why they were being painted blue. totally scared the *beep* out of me.
