Any saw the similarities?

This film reminded me the War of the Worlds film ...

The machines that destroyed the world are exactly the same machines used in the Steven Spielberg film, they only didn't make that peculiar sound ... and to finish it off, the end is also the exact same thing, water drops with life in them ...

They totally were inspired by that film, for sure. Also the Geppetto/Pinocchio and the Edward Swissorhands essence were also very present.

It's always bad when one film remembers you other ones, that shows it was not very original ... Never the less i enjoyed it =)

The machines reminded me of Animatrix: The Second Renaissance, while the story has a huge amount of commonalities with Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within. In fact, I would consider this movie a ripoff of the latter, if it wasn't for its original characters and the overall "charm" of the movie.

I guess it gets harder and harder to come up with an original story, doesn't it?

Yep thats what i like about it.
nobody said it was going to tell us a original story... the originality comes from the way it was told.

Visually Shane was inspired by the films by the Brothers Quay.. and when you kinda peace all your individual inspirations together you can come up with something thats new or fresh.. 9 was that. Plus personal i don't watch many films like this so it's not something I've seen over and over.

Except... the robots in War Of The World were aliens, and the ones in this movie were made by humans. So no, not the same...

Whether or not it is influenced by War of the Worlds is irrelevant to me. I just want to remind you that War of the Worlds is not Steven Spielberg's. It is a classic novel written by H. G. Wells that was later made into a movie (several times in fact)

The machines resemble more the ones in Animatrix. The Brain machine and "soldiers/tanks", and the destruction of the world are very similar to those from Second Renaissance. Although in "9" they are more steam- than cyberpunk.

It's not a bad thing that the director was inspired by some other work. It's still one of the best and thought provoking SF films of it's decade.
