I love the respect they used even for those they dissagreed with was inspiring. I especially like how the ship Captain told Adams to get below decks, makes me proud to be a Sailor. If only our politicians had as much care for the people and respect for eachother, this would be a better country.

Yes, but these were the educated men of the era. They knew, as stated by Franklin at one point, that they would never be able to solve the tough issues they were grappling with together if they fought and insulted each other publicly. And they were uniting against a common, deadly enemy.
They were mostly gentlemen behaving in what was understood at the time to be a gentlemanly manner.

I always thought a good SNL sketch would have Donald Trump as a New York delegate to the Continental Congress. He would have put Adams, Jefferson, Franklin and those other unsuccessful politicians in their place.
shareDonald Trump would have failed miserably as a 18th century politician. while his views on women and minorities would have been just fine with the 18th century mindsets (Minus, of course, the amazing Abigail Adams) The flaunting of wealth, ambition, and self importance lately spoken was, at best, considered uncouth and un-gentlemanly, and at worst a sin. He would have been a pariah. Campaigning was completely frowned upon...everything was done behind the scenes and should not appear to involve the actual candidate. Washington set himself up to have leadership appear to fall effortlessly on his shoulders. That was the way it was done. Washington would have looked at Trump and been horrified and given him his infamous silent treatment and stared him down till The Donald shut it and sat down.
