I know its like 10 needles going into your skin at the same time...but the people getting them done dont even flinch! I know most people get drunk/drugged before a tattoo..but those people dont look THAT out of it
It sometimes depends on the location. If you watch people getting a tattoo over their ribs, sometimes you can see they are in pain. I got mine above my ankle and it didn't hurt.
when i got my tattoo it was more less of a pinch and it really wasnt as bad as you think it is. and if your drunk or drugged you wont be allowed to get a tattoo especially at a shop that has its own show. Useually the artist ,if your wasted , will turn you away or just slap on a temp. but ones who really want the money of dont know your out of your head will just go ahead and do it. Gadzooks!-Preston & Steve rock!!
I've got five none of them hurt. The feeling was more annoying then anything else. The irritaing feeling goes way for me after a few minutes and it kinda just goes numb. Not bad really. :-)
I have a full sleeve on my right arm, and none of it hurt. Not the elbow, inside the upper arm or even when it got up into the armpit.
I personally find the feeling therapeutic, and addictive. It definitely doesn't qualify as pain in my book.
The best way I heard somebody explain the sensation of getting tattooed is this - it feels like somebody drawing on your sunburnt skin with a biro. Anybody with any ink out there will know how good a description this is.
And in my experience, most people who go on about how much pain they were in when getting tattooed, they are the sort of idiot who only goes out to get some ink too look "cool", or beacause their imbicile mate got one or whatever. And a pound to a pinch of $hit that they only end up with one pi$$ poor excuse for a tattoo for the rest of their lives. Proper, genuine lovers and collectors of tattoos, we don't go round showing off about "the agony" beacause we are in it for the right reasons. We get tattoos for ourselves, not anybody else.

Thank you very much for the support. May I be so bold as to ask if you are of the inked persuasion? If yes, let us know what you've got - it's always interesting to talk to others about their ink.

I didn't take anything for the pain with my first one (upper arm shoulder) and I did expect some pain, but the whole thing felt like a massage that made me feel so relaxed I almost feel asleep
1. People shouldn't drink before Tattoos, it thins your blood and you bleed everywhere
2. No they don't get drugged up, it generally just doesn't hurt in specific areas, I'm 17 and have a red star on each of my arm, no pain at all, just like a really hot scratching sensation
3. Seriously get a Tattoo, they become a real part of you and you'll love it
The placement and person themselves is usually the biggest factors determining how much a tattoo can hurt. Usually if a tattoo is placed near nerve endings or near bones that are closer to the skin (spine, ribs, etc) it will hurt a lot more then other places of the body. The person too, like most everyone has said on here, determines the pain. Some people don't mind it as bad, others hate it, like it, whatever. I have found the more you think about it and dread it the worse you'll think it is.
I have a tattoo on my back of a bunch of butterflies/lilies and it didn't hurt much at all. Sometimes when it was a long line that went over my spine I would be feeling it pretty good, but otherwise it was nothing to worry about.
I bet they didn't show too many people hating getting a tattoo cause it hurt on the show much because then if you saw it, why would you want to get a tattoo and why from them? You probably wouldn't and that would put them out of business after awhile if it caught on it hurt from them. They probably just edited those people out of the show.

Of course you're unique...just like everyone else.
if you can handle getting a needle from the doctor you can tolerate a tattoo needle. it feels the same however the tattoo one is more constant (obviously)
It didn't hurt at all, I found it to be very relaxing and almost fell asleep. It all depends on how well you can take the needle and your state of mind. I think you can block pain out if you relax and have a calm state of mind.
There are other factors that can make a diffrence, the skill of the person doing the work [my artist has a light touch] and the part of the body. I have heard ribs or areas close to the bone hurt more.
PS no reputable artist will work on you if you are drunk
That's the beauty of TV editing - barely showing the pained expressions on the customers' faces. While some barely flinch when getting a tattoo done, it's generally acknowledged as being unpleasant with varying degrees of pain, depending on what part of the body you're getting it done and your tolerance for pain. For example, I got my tattoo on my upper left arm - it was intense at first, but after about five minutes I started going numb. Whereas my friend got hers on the base of her spine and she had to be scooped up off the floor.
Not being scared of needles also helps.
Go take a step outside - see what’s shaking in the real world.
It all depends on the placement. I have a full sleeve and chest on my left arm and a tattoo on my lower ribs. The ribs werent as bad as I thought they would be, but of course still hurt. The full arm and chest gives you basically all of the tattoo feelings. The upper inner arm is by far the worst. The elbow and the chest hurt pretty bad as well. And to the O.P. youre a tool if you think most people get drunk or drugged up before getting a tattoo. Maybe some tools do but 99% do not.
And here is a link to my tattoos just to show you Im not lying about my life, like most of the people on this site do
Hey cgriffi2, I checked out the link to your ink shots. Some nice work there, mate. Very nice sleeve indeed. I particularly dig the shading on the wave work, and it's always cool to see a Japanese flower in there somewhere too.
Nice one.

like most people said it depends on the person getting the tattoo and the placement. i have 1 on the back of my neck and one on my hip. The neck felt like cold chills the whole time and the center of my hip did not hurt one bit. However when i got the one on my foot i was about to cry. Since there was not as much fat and more bones there was nothing to cushion the pain.
