Id like to get a tattoo because it looks cool...

Ive never seen a single person go into that shop just getting a tattoo because it looks spiffy and they like it :)

I always get the feeling that the tattoos they show on the show are pretty disproportionate in that they almost all seem to have deep meaningful reasons for getting them...not that I agree that they are :) I for one cannot stand all of the West Coast philosophy on the show. Id understand if they did go out of their way to only show ones with a story behind them, it makes better TV but I think theyve gone too far, theres not an episode without at least a few people coming in for a good cry and a memorial tattoo.

"I'm a christian but Im going to get a tattoo of the laughing buddha because it represents peace" :S They piss me off too :).

Does anyone work in a real tattoo shop? Are most people getting tattoos goiong in with reasons like this? All memorial tattoos or to represent something?

/reading this back, Im apparently a right *beep* :) But Id still like to know the answer to my question.

Well I've only got one tattoo, thats of my Rugby teams crest, but I know what you're saying. I know a guy who got tribal tattoos because they look cool or to look intimidating, but he's not in a tribe he was born in a hospital in a boring city, he's not celtic and it just looks naff I reckon, like when girls get flowers or something on the bottom of their back, are you a florist?
My sister got shooting stars on her foot, I think just because of the look, she ain't an astronomer and she can't tell me where the north star is (I told her to look north), so I agree they must just cut those guys out of the episodes to give tattoos a more classy vibe.

I wouldn't mind getting a tattoo because it looked cool, but it would go like this 'I want to get this tattoo because of logical reason A, but does it look cool?' if yes, I'd consider getting it.

I'm kind of sick of hearing the backstories. Some are nice but most of them makes me want to puke sometimes

I kind of agree with that. Getting a tattoo because you love the image is just as good a reason I think.

Yeaah IRL, there's not always a good reason to get a tattoo. There are honestly some things I'd get just because they're visually appealing to me. I made friends with the piercing apprentice at the place I go to and when I first started talking to him he told me half the tattoos he has (and he's one of those mofos that's covered from like face/neck/body, the only place he didn't have any was from like his chest to his thighs) were because he just wanted them. Not because there was a particular reason. I find that some of the most beautiful tattoos are just that; beautiful.

I think people like to convince themselves that getting a tattoo IS a good idea and they have a bulletproof reason for getting one.

But, some of the reasons are over the top.

I think there is no big deal in just getting a tattoo because it looks cool or you personally really want it.

As long as the work decent quality and you had an enjoyable experience in getting it. I think more power to you!

When I was getting my tattoo, there was a guy getting his beside me saying that his friend died this year so in what better way was there to show how he cares than by getting a tattoo in memory of him. (it wasn't a portrait...it was a pinup girl)

I mean...he was getting all deep on us and it got to the point, where I was like....are you REALLY getting it for your friend...or because you just wanted this tattoo and now you've got a story to go behind it?

He was a lovely fella and there's no harm in doing that, I just got the feeling that to validate your tattoo it has to have a deep story.

Is it a surprise that people have personal reasons for getting an image permanently inscribed on their bodies? My ink is all of significance to me above and beyond just liking the look of the image. I suspect that people will not usually take the step of getting a permanent tattoo unless the image has significance for them.
