Smoking on train?

When the Nana's first meet on the train, rocker Nana lights a cigarette, but nobody else in the train is smoking. Would smoking on a public train have been allowed in 2005? And, if so, is there really so little smoking in Japan that she might be the only one?

reply

In Japan there are designated cars that allow smoking, but if I recall correctly, most of the cars are non-smoking.

I'm doing my research on Japan right now, since im going in May. It says that most JR trains are not smoking and a certain JR route is considering banning it as of this year.

But yea, some trains do have smoking still...
