movie or anime?

I haven't even seen the anime yet. I've only seen the movie, which I thought was great. In your opinion do you prefer the movie or the anime?

reply

The anime is better, but this is really well cast-- the anime is obviously much longer, so there's better plot/character development.

I completely agree. I've watched the anime and I'm just starting to read the manga and last night my friend and I watched the film. The film was quite odd. They really made an effort with the sets and costumes but some of the acting was bizarre (Shouji?!) and there seem to be a lot of long pauses. The anime is 47 episodes long so you've got ages to learn about the characters. The characterisation is phenomenal - the best I've seen in an anime so far - and this doesn't really come out in the film. How can it? There just simply isn't time.

The anime is fantastic. Watch it watch watch it!

I agree. Both the movies were kind of strange. Some of the casting was pretty good, but others were way off and the acting was not up to the standard of the anime. The characters seemed very flat in the movie, whereas in the anime they're so fleshed out they're like real people! I know they can't fit everything into the movie from so many anime episodes, but there was no character development at all =/ So everyone should definitley watch the anime and read the manga!

I haven't read the manga or watched the anime, but the film definitely made me want to do both! Check out my review for the first film here:

As for the sequel, well, that's another story...

the anime is much better!
i got very disspinted with Shouji and Shin on the movie, the rest was good though
If a thing isn't worth saying, you sing it.

I agree! the anime was LOT better :) both good on their own terms, but personally enjoyed the anime over the live action.
Cheers!

The movie. The anime is atrocious, bad voice acting coupled with terrible animation. At least the film is watchable and not cringe worthy like the anime.

But enough theology, I'm gettin' a hankerin' to punch some *beep* teeth out.

reply

As far as voice acting goes, were you watching the Japanese or English dub?

I found the English dub to be horrid. The Japanese dub was better.

Animation wise, many shoujo animes use the "super-skinny doe-eyed" look.

Take a look at Fruits Basket, Revolutionary Girl Utena,
Marmalade Boy, and many others. As far as character design goes, I think NANA was closest to Marmalade Boy, with a little Red Garden thrown in. (Which is strange because most people consider Red Garden a horror/thriller anime.)

I'm not sure I could answer the OP's question. They're both quite good. I just logged in to find someplace to post that I just got done seeing first the anime, then reading the manga, and now I've just finished this movie.

I am blown away. This has got to be the best manga/ anime adaptation to film I've ever seen. I'm a 47 year old movie enthusiast and a prolific reader of several forms of media. I've seen a good number of adaptations. This one is excellent.

Obviously the manga and the anime had more time to develop characters, but with that limitation in mind I think the film did an admirable job of conveying not only the story line but also the emotional progressions. There was surprisingly little narrative voice over. Having seen the anime first I thought there would be a lot of it, but there wasn't as much as I expected. There were only a few instances in which I found myself thinking if I wasn't already more familiar with the story that might be an awkward silence or a pause too long. Even given that, it did still suggest an introspection happening. I've read a few people suggest that the actress playing Nana was wooden but I disagree. She's a very stoic character and without knowing that about the character to begin with, juxtaposed against the Hachi character she would seem wooden. I respond to that statement that it's more a function of the character's attributes than a reflection of the actor.

I'm going to watch Nana 2 next.

I sincerely hope the mangaka recovers from her illness and is able to complete at least the manga. A wrapped conclusion would be most satisfying to this story.

This one is true to the anime so I really think they could of been played side by side. Even the choreography of the characters was spot on.

Part 2 of the live action was highly disappointing. I think they focused more on making the characters look more like the anime (Hatchi's new haircut and nana's crimson red lipstick instead of nude shades like in 1) instead of staying true to the script.

So for 1 I choose both, for 2 I choose anime.

My order is: Manga > Anime > Live Action Movie.

I really enjoyed this fil but as has been stated, on the anime there's more character development, and it's more "faithful" to the manga. Anyways, this movie was very close to the original story.
I like the anime music better. Anna Tsuchiya's songs for "Blast" are more "rocker" than Mika Nakashima's songs.

So sad Ai Yazawa left the manga on hiatus!

Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language.
