i heard this ones a massive hit in japan and this could mean one thing..

unfortunately, a possible american remake... tsk tsk if hollywood gets this one. i can imagine now, hilary duff and lindsay lohan in one movie, a hit that'll piss off the anime and manga fans

reply

Hmm, I don't think they'll remake this movie. Even if they did, it wouldn't look right since this is based off a manga.

i definitely agree.. well i hope hollywood doesnt remake this, i dont think it'd make any money off the remake if that happened.

i agree too, i dont think there will be a remake
this is a great movie, it should be left untouched

[deleted]

well I dunno.

This movie revolves around punk or simply rock music and Americans are familiar with that so I wouldn't be surprised if they'll remake it.

But if they do, i wish for the following:

1)a famous and talented singer to sing an American version of Glamourous Sky. ie. Kelly Clarkson. She has a really nice voice and no Lindsay Lohan or Hilary Duff. SO basically she'll be the heroine as well

2)director of School Of Rock should direct

3)Mariah Carey to sing a Endless Story

reply

i don't think i could stand it if they remade it. it would really piss manga/anime fans. plus, it's already popular the way it is. remaking it would just be a big waste of money. i defiantly won't support it, even if mariah sings endless story and kelly sings glam sky... but i guess that wud be better than lindsay... lol

reply

i think i just threw up a little bit.

I...You know how they say if you have nothing kind to say then say nothing at all? I'm gonna stick to that bit of gold now and bite my tongue. (Unless this counts as saying something. Which I guess it does. So...Yeah.)

^ I think you just killed the movie, even before it was made, or thought to be made.

reply

if my suggestion killed the movie, then this cast already killed and multilated the movie. LOL j/k

my suggestion is only reasonable, especially the director. He'll bring the rock out the movie as well, unlike this version, which is like romance over the rock aspect.

Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff?! GROSS! What is it with people and thoughts of Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff acting? The movies they have been in suck enough already!

True that man. They suck. What's up with Hillary's face and Lindsay's...ugh, nevermind...
If they were to make a remake, I guess they would have to ask Japan, and Japan would likely say NO. It takes place in Japan, it's based off a manga, and Hollywood would totally rot the freshness of the movie. Hollywood remakes suck. They can not change the orginality of something so big! And if they did (GOD FORBID) then that would be the end of that. The whole "NANA" originality.

reply

they should get good actors to be in it like how about me??? i look just like hachi LOL im sure im better than lindsay and make Orlando bloom my hunky boyfriend who cheats on me with who...dk yet. lol

Are you koo koo bananas?

reply

it's not a movie that would do well in america... and yeah it was huge in japan... i was there in august and there were posters and commercials for it everywhere...

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I have seen the first episode of the anime, and I've seen two clips from the movie (concert scenes), and from what I've seen, I can only think of one American singer who properly fits Mika's character: Amy Lee, of Evanescence. I don't think she would do it, mind you. As far as I know, she's never done any acting. However, she's the only person I can think of with the right image.
As far as the other Nana, I think there's any number of actresses who could do that. Maybe one of the Olsen twins. They've got about the right look.

If there was a remake, yeah I'm sure it would piss off a lot of the manga fans, but it really is well suited to be adapted for an American audience it seems. It could be done well.
Unfortunately, Disney's the only company I can see doing it, and they would do it poorly. They've been doing a lot of remakes lately, and they've all been not very good.

reply

Amy Lee... uh... if she could cut down her weight a bit, it would

reply

It wouldn't make any sense, either. Because of culture. It would suck. I have never met someone, who wasn't Japanese, named Nana. Unless she is your grandmother.

reply

Norikitty2000, I disagree regarding the culture. There are certainly things in the movie that are uniquely Japanese, but that's why it would require an adaptation, not simply a translation. And the main story line would fit well in an American setting.

Maybe rocker Nana would have to call preppy Nana Rover instead of Hachi. Maybe Sachiko and Shouji wouldn't have to run to the train every evening because they can't afford a cab. Maybe they don't need to include all those 7s. Maybe they move to New York, or Chicago, or LA instead of Tokyo, but I think it could still be made into a very good story. No, it would not be true to the manga, like this movie was, but it could still be good.

Regarding the name, do a search here on IMDb for Nana, and you'll find 200 people named Nana. Some of them are Japanese, but not all of them. Here's just a small sample of a few of these names:
Nana King
Nana Fischer
Nana Murphy
Nana Bryant
Nana Greenwald
Nana Visitor
By their last names, these women would seem to be likely of European descent. No, it's not a common American name, but I doubt that would be a big deal at all.

To be honest, I think this is nothing more than a theoretical discussion though, because I doubt it'll be picked up by an American movie studio.

reply

I hope there'll be NO remake. i love the movie the way it is.
She was the ship of dreams..

reply

There probobly won't be a remake since it's based off a manga... though if it is, I would hope they made it exactly like the japanese one, with just americans or at least just english speaking japanese

reply

I agree with you. Though I very much liked the Japanese one. OMG Yasu, Kyosuke, Jun chan, Takumi and the 2 Nana just seemed like they jumped out of the comic books! I think Reira was a good pick as well, but I really did not like Ren. He was too introvert and chubby. But that's only my personal opinion.

reply

I'm just thinking back about this movie and I just thought Hollywood shouldn't remake it cause it sucks.

Difference in culture? hmm...there are a lot of female rockers in America. And Mika and everybody else looked too much like posers to be rockers. I was very disappointed with this movie cause I was expecting something like females dominating in rock music but movie mostly talks about are pop music and romance. LOL I was expecting this be something like School Of Rock but with girls and some romance.

That song by Yuna Ito sounded good but it wasn't rock, it was pop. Same with Mika's song and the music video for Glamorous Sky was terrible cause of the syncing.

reply

pop(popular) music is different in every culture. japanese goth rock sounds much more like american pop-rock, it doesn't mean it's not rock. have you ever heard of soft-rock? or hard rock bands doing ballads?

it's not a hollywood movie "student band", don't pretend to know what you're talking about.

--anti-dubber.

reply

@Mox

the only thing in common amongst all cultures in regards to popular music is it's meant to sell a lot so it has to have a lot of hooks and catchy melodies. In terms of this movie, Mika was suppose to play some bad ass punk rocker chick so please explain to me how a song like Glamorous Sky, which lacked aggressiveness of a punk rock song, would match her character.

Punk music is punk music everywhere, so is heavey metal, hard rock, soft rock, whatever but the difference would be language.

And in terms of that goth rock statement, I assume you mean Visual Kei rock bands like Dir En Grey or X-Japan? Just so you know, VK has nothing to do with the music but merely the looks so American pop-rock is not Japanese goth rock cause goth rock is goth rock everywhere.

btw, where did I say this is a Hollywood movie? I was just comparing it to, IMO, a much better movie liks School Of Rock that actually had something to do with rock.

@xX_ooo_Xx

you are right, I didn't read the manga but so what if it sticked close to the manga? the plot was still uninteresting and it was a total let down since it got so much hype like actual talented bands contributing to the Nana dedication album, making of Nana dvd, the word of mouth from the anime/manga community about how badass rocker chick Nana is...blah blah and then we get some romance rocker poser crap?

but everything else you said i agree.

If Hollywood were to making something like Nana first, the otakus and so called hardcore film buffs here would be bashing all over it. LOL

reply

"Mika was suppose to play some bad ass punk rocker chick"

Stop looking at it from an American perspective, it's a Japanese movie. she's supposed to play a rocker chick in terms of appearance, just like most j-goth bands. most of them hardly ever play goth rock music, Laruku's most popular song Niji, is soft rock at best with a dash of vocal wailing. There are better rock bands in Japan (eg. Siam Shade, Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, Tak Matsumoto Group, etc...) but they also play a lot of soft rock/pop songs. The thing with J-goth or J-rock is their visual appeal, their attitude and demeanor is appealing, that's part of their package, not just the music. So no, goth rock music has the same meaning everywhere, but not if you look at it from a wider perspective than just pick it apart purely for the music. Yes, the song's supposed to be important, but it's not everything.

i doubt any of the suicidal goth loli's hanging out in Shinjuku have even heard of Tori Amos or The Clash, but are they goth? yep, by attitude and appearance. OTOH, how many goth chicks in north america are Vivienne Westwood addicts?

"If Hollywood were to making something like Nana first, the otakus and so called hardcore film buffs here would be bashing all over it. LOL"

yep, because they'd probably end up f--king it up just like the upcoming remake of Infernal Affairs(into yet another Irish Gangs of New York) or the horrendous Memoirs of 3 Chinese Crackwh--e(because they can't tell Chinese from Japanese), rather than taking it up a notch and produce something spectacular like Sin City or even somewhat mediocre like Aeon Flux.

i would love to see a Brit/Aus(with Hollywood money) interpretation of Anime live action remake. LotR/Harry Potter being the success they are...

well how am I looking at it from an American perspective? Ok let's just go with what you said and Mika is just a rocker chick. Still, my point is that this movie didn't have much emphasis on the rock aspect but basically just some romanctic movie that got way too much hype. So you say J-rock is appearance and music? ok so they got the appearance but where's the music? At least in School Of Rock, they talked about the instruments and inspirational bands but what do we have in this movie? bunch of poser crap.

There's one thing I don't understand about the Japanese music community is they criticize American bands/artists for their emphasis on appearance and not the music while looking past people like Mana from Moi Dix Mois. For some reason a band like High And Mighty Color, which btw, rocks more than any VK band, is considered j-pop.

"The thing with J-goth or J-rock is their visual appeal, their attitude and demeanor is appealing, that's part of their package, not just the music. Visual appearance shouldn't be used to determine what kind of musicians some artists are. Musicians play music and we should judge them by just that but everything else is just....something else. And since we were in the topic of appearance vs music, why did you bring up TMG, Siam Shade or TMGE? They never used gimmicks...i mean...their extreme makeup or over the top gothic lolita gear to sell their music.

"i doubt any of the suicidal goth loli's hanging out in Shinjuku have even heard of Tori Amos or The Clash, but are they goth? yep, by attitude and appearance. OTOH, how many goth chicks in north america are Vivienne Westwood addicts?
"

ok you are right, they visually goth but what's that gotta do with musicians who dress that way?

"yep, because they'd probably end up f--king it up just like the upcoming remake of Infernal Affairs(into yet another Irish Gangs of New York) or the horrendous Memoirs of 3 Chinese Crackwh--e(because they can't tell Chinese from Japanese), rather than taking it up a notch and produce something spectacular like Sin City or even somewhat mediocre like Aeon Flux.
"

it's okay, at least we got school of rock. As for The Departed, so far the screenings are good and it seems it's darker than IA, which a lot of Asian film buffs doubted would happen. Now, we just gotta wait for the hypocrisy to come up when the release date comes but I have a feeling all these people would be attacking Leo's appearance rather than the content of the movie.

reply

Even though this post is really old I still feel I need to get my two bits in here.

@student_band
You have/had a very STEREOTYPICAL point of view as to what rock and punk is. School of Rock was good, but thats old school rock and roll on that movie, yeah its great rock but still old school. Also only Posers use the term Posers when defining someone they don't know.

Also who are you to say whats rock and what isn't? Who are you to say how a person can dress and how that is suppose to define who they are and what music they can make? Anyone can be rock and roll with the right attitude and passion and in my opinion Nana (Mika) had the right passion and attitude for the part.

Mika had the right look, Skinny, Pale almost perfect to the manga face! It didn't hurt that she could sing too, so they didn't have to dub her voice with a different set of pipes in editing or auto-tune her.

And oh this whining "it wasn't all rock like school of rock waaaahh" crap is stupid. Read the anime before you assume its based on rock and don't go into watching a movie expecting it to be like a different movie, especially if they were made in completely different countries by different directors. Yeah Nana was a rocker chick, but thats not the point of it. It was just setting it up so both Nana's could have completely different personalities and some how they end up caring for each other like best friends regardless of their differences.

And the complaining that it was a romance, well the Nana manga is considered Shojo, meaning— "often with a strong focus on human and romantic relationships and emotions. Strictly speaking, shojo manga does not comprise a style or a genre per se, but rather indicates a target demographic. Examples include Cardcaptor Sakura, Ouran High School Host Club, Fruits Basket, Fushigi Yuugi, Sailor Moon, Vampire Knight, Romeo x Juliet, Princess Ai, Pretty Cure, Skip Beat,Watashi Ni XX Shinasai and Tokyo Mew Mew." -courtesy of wikipedia

*big sigh of relief* sorry but I just needed to get that out there.

studnt band, you obviously have not read the manga. The movie was a pretty accurate adaption of the manga so saying that you are disappointed with the movie for those reasons that you have stated doesn't really make much sense.

Also, saying this movie won't be remade because it is based off a manga means nothing. America is even making their own adaptions of manga. For instance: Evangelion and Battle Angel Alita.
And even if a Nana movie does come out in America, it wont necessarily mean that it is a remake of this movie. It could be Hollywood's own interpretation of the manga. Though everyone would proabably still be mad about Hollywood making their own adaption of the manga, because it seems to everyone it's only ok if Japan, or any country except America, does it. You people do realize that other countries, including Japan, remake movies too right?

And someone said that the actor playing Ren was chubby?!?! Ryuhei Matsuda is definitely not chubby. Don't get me wrong, I realize that you not liking him as Ren is your opinion, but I just can't see how he is chubby.

reply

I've considered how they could do this in the US, and a lot of cultural things would be lost... the name "Nana" in Japanese lends itself to a lot of number play (some of which is seen in the movie), whereas in the States it's just an odd name. I think you'd either have to come up with a new numerical name (I know that, for example, Six is a logical surname), or you'd have to drop the number play entirely with the Nana name (or maybe have one or two references just for the geeks out there). Either way, the whole "Hachi" thing would be completely lost no matter how you do it. :)

reply

Well you expected wrong, so that's your fault, not the film. So narrow-minded...

reply

well listen to my medicine, i think it suits blackstones (nana's band) the most.. mika's voice still cant be considered as punk, but the music is quite good. actually i'm quite disappointed with hitoiro, the new song for nana 2, cos it sounds more pop than before.. for trapnest too! gah. all their songs are great, but not what i expected..
still, i really love the movie, i can recognize all the manga scenes from the movie :)

back to the main topic, NO REMAKE! it'd be freaking weird.

reply

This movie is partly great because it is Japanese and based on a manga. Why would anyone want any American version? So the movie can lose all its meaning?! So they can cast some blonde, Lindsay Lohan maybe one of the Olsens, Avril Lavign, Hillary Duff as lead. No thank you! Hollywood stay away from this movie!

Badass Punk rocker chick?!! Whose interpretation was that? cause the movie never mentioned that, the mangaka never mentioned that so where'd everyone get it from. Yeah, she likes Westwood and the Sex Pistols. But the Sex Pistols would have never even happened if it weren't for Mclauren, Westwoods partner in crime. Sex Pistols = Mclauren's brainchild. In the design world Westwoods a legend. So why can't Nana like her things. Her clothes have nothing to do with thrashing and headbanging or a hardcore sound on stage? Thinking she can't dress like that because she doesn't have the right sound is just as bad as thinking someone can't play or sing like that because they don't have the right clothes. This **(character)** isn't a Poseur just because she mixed awesome clothes with a softer rock sound. And what's wrong with romance! Punks can't fall in love

This is a really great movie for NANA fans & this movie follows the manga very closely so don't expect anything else except great acting. Do not expect school of rock w/ girls, LOL cause this ain't it!

reply

People in hollywood would never touch this b/c it isn;t kung fu or horror. Japan has alot of good drama show & movie but INC people don't care abgout that. If it's not kung fu or a horror ( or a anime) the big wigs dont give.

reply

Isn't Lake House based on a Korean drama?
Isn't Shall We Dance? on a Japanese drama?

Hollywood shouldn't remake this. If they do, they should get completely new actresses to fill roles and big named cameos. We don't need commercial pop icons to try acting because most of them suck anyway. Duff or Lohan as singers are just as bad.

reply

commercial pop icons? isn't Mika Nakashima a pop icon? lol you people sound like you hang around at those otaku jpop/anime forums a lot and listen to bands like Dir En Grey or Malice Mizer, thinking they are the 2nd coming of Jesus.

what's wrong with romance? nothing wrong with that but this movie relied too much of that aspect. 90% romance but 10% rock. You people obviously had not seen the promotion for this movie. Her image was a stereotypical rocker and Nana had a big list of big Japanese bands like Sex Machineguns and Shina Ringo (to name a few) to make a dedication album for the series. Just when you thought this movie was MORE than JUST romance and about a girl who topped all the guys in rock music, it turned out to be....JUST a romantic movie.

I would rather have a 50/50 split of rockin out and romance but instead it was uneven that it turned out to be ....just a teen romantic movie.

so to the people who complained that this couldn't convert to American audiences, well...you are right...in terms of the names of the characters and that's pretty much it. It doesn't matter if the movie followed the manga cause the plot was shallow.

oh yeah, i got the badass punk rocker chick from

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nana_%28manga%29

actually just punk rocker chick in that link but I added "badass" cause she actted like she was so tough for trying to beat up Hachi's ex-BF, didn't smile and looked cold.

reply

Read the manga. Seriously. The movie cut out so much, especially the second movie (don't know why people are saying it's true to the manga, because it's really not). Also, the movie only goes a very short way into the series, so you really miss a lot, aside from all that they cut out. Yes, it is largely about romance and relationships (both platonic and otherwise), but there is a lot about music too.
