How 'true' was this film to the true story?

I watched this last night and found it very inspirational. I noticed in the credits that it was based on true events, however Hollywood tends to take quite a bit of artistic licence with such things.

Does anyone know the true story behind the film?

Ted Danson's character was based on a man named David MacEnulty. The website of his foundation is at macenultychess.org. I don't know much about the specifics of the true story, but for anyone who is really interested, there's plenty of information to be had with a bit of Googling.
