Great Scottish films?

Okay. So I'm a Scot. Born in Inverness, lived in Paisley, Troon and Edinburgh.

And while I lived there I never made an effort to watch Scottish films (outside of the obvious, like Shallow Grave and Trainspotting).

But now I'm living in Yorkshire (meh) and pining for the homeland and am looking for some excellent films set in Scotland (I'm particularly fond of the ones set on the seedier side, as there's a particular nostalgia there).

Already ordered Red Road and Sweet Sixteen on Amazon (neither of which I've seen), but can anyone recommend anymore?

Here's a site that may help you:

I notice that the whimsical Local Hero (with Peter Riegert) is on this list, but I'd recommend the sweet Dear Frankie with Gerard Butler (300), and for something a bit rougher, My Name is Joe with Peter Mullan ("Syd" in Children of Men).

My Name is Joe is a superb film. Anything with Peter Mullan would get my vote. What about Young Adam, Orphans, or Ratcatcher. It's not by a Scottish director, but Breaking the Waves would have you feeling homesick perhaps!

Another good Scottish movie, set in Glasgow, is Ratcatcher (or Ratcatchers). For a good book by a Scot check out Between the Bridge and the River.

Morvern Callar, with Samantha Morton. Another amazing film by Scottish writer/director Lynne Ramsay, who also made Ratcatcher.

Can't make a list of great Scottish films without mentioning 'Gregory's Girl' too!

Try and get your hands on Morag McKinnon's short film 'Home'.

One of the best films I've ever seen. Set in Scotland but not sure where.

The acid house by Paul Mcguigan adapted from the Irvine Welsh novel. Awesome!
