Where did you imagine all that tape tumbleweed comes from?

I've often wondered about where all that tangled tape comes from, blowing around every city I've ever seen. I guess I just assumed that cassette tape is a popular play thing with neighborhood kids. What are your theories? Has anyone ever played back tape junk that you found?
