Catherine O´Hara = HEARTBREAKING!!!

Even though I consider her one of the most talented actors, her performance here is totally heartbreaking and fresh!!!

I totally love what a real actress can make with just make up and a total control and conscious use of her facial expressions!!!

And the calm and subtle performance throughout the entire duration of the film, WOW!

You can just watch her trying to cope and assimilate the buzz on her Oscar Nomination which quickly spreads like a lethal virus troughout the entire crew and cast...

But the real moment, the one Miss O´Hara should have been considered for a REAL Academy Award Nomination is the one when she is anxiously and desperately waiting to listen her name on the lips of the anouncers.

MY GOD! That is a lesson on impecable and sublime acting!!!

KUDOS to Miss O´Hara who was the victim of one of the most ridiculous cases of Art imitating life imitating art i´ve ever seen in my entire life.

What do you think about this?

I don't have thoughts on the actual actress personally, but I really didn't feel bad for the marilyn hack character. She was a pretty unpleasant person to begin with (before the oscar buzz started). She's vain, selfish, snippy and talks down to people, both friends and co-workers. I liked the movie, but after a second viewing it really came together that she was not a very sympathetic character.

reply

stephen, I completely agree. Other people have told me that scene resonated with them and I really think it's because she was SO damn funny that the sudden sympathy she evoked was unexpected. She sat there looking ridiculous but you felt her desperation and how badly she wanted it.

When I watched her in this movie I thought, people just donn't get more talented than this. She actually made herself look like she had plastic surgery. I could NOT stop laughing at her facial expressions.

reply

You mean she did not have facial surgery ? Wow,,this woman is a good actress!

All of these Christopher Guest "mockumentaries" could be seen as valentines to Catherine O'Hara--she had the emotional "turning-point" roles again and again and did so well with them, despite not having a reputation as a straight actress (as opposed to a comedian) before. Each of the films has a surprisingly poignant, meaningful emotional climax which largely plays out in her face.

reply

This wasn't a mockumentary.

reply

Sure it is.

reply

I've loved her since the early 1980s, but never more so than in this film. She's awesome!

Honour thy parents. They were hip to the groove too once you know.

reply

She was great in this film especially her last line:
If I could expunge everything whthin, I am left comfortable

reply

Agreed. Though I didn't like this film as much as the others by this same ensemble, the scenes of her watching the nomination announcements and speaking to the class at the very end are very, very beautifully done.

reply

I felt bad for her. I didn't think she was a bad person even though she was superficial.

reply

What was sad was to watch her self destruct her oscar chances by freezing during that morning show and then going with the drugged out, massively botoxed, desperately trying to still look young style. She went from a dignified older actress to what Anna Nicole Smith would have looked like if she lived another 30 years.

reply

Yes. To everything you said. This is becoming one of my favorite performances; I love it more every time I watch it. She's so precise, so realized, and soooo heartbreaking.
