What the *beep* is an ex machina?
Nerds use it as a verb, noun, adjective, etc. but what the hell is it?

It's latin for "of the Machine", derived from the phrase "God of the Machine", used in theater and movies as an unexpected power or event saving a seemingly hopeless situation, especially as a contrived plot device in a play or novel.
shareYup. This. I was half expecting a deus ex machina in the movie, but that would have been too silly. ;-)
shareIn ancient theater, the device of an actor playing a god such as Apollo or Zeus would be lowered down to the stage by a machine in order to save the situation in the plot and bring an end to the play. "Deus ex Machina"= god from the machine.
In this case, I think it could also mean that Ava is entering the real world in the form of a human and probably intends to live life as a human, thus is an ex or former machine.
"Ex Machina - of the machine" could also indicate the nature of AI, that is, it makes us ask if the AI is sentient etc., what it thinks, for example "The thoughts of the machine".
I explained it in a stupid way but I hope you got my point across.
