I could barely watch this thing due to Fiennes horrid Irish accent - at best, it was a craptastic Scottish imitation, but definitely not Irish. Could they not afford a linguistics coach on set?

reply

thats his accent its not fake

reply

isn't Fiennes British, not Irish?

reply

Well, yes, he's british, however, he spent a great many years of his youth being raised in Ireland...so he's well versed in Irish dialect..

Accents are like that...

Just as Virginians(west and regular alike have their own accents...

Just as New York is not the same as Boston

Just as Broklyn is not the same as manhattan..

EVEN moreso

Alabama is not Texas, is not Georgia, is not Arkansas, is not Florida, is not California, is not Nevada....

I always hated Irish accents because I only knew a couple of county's dialect...

IMHO, Fiennes accent was bettter than most, when considering accents..

What does the "Florida" accent sound like? Are you referring to the country accent of the north & panhandle?

reply

Is it possible that he was trying to imitate the real Bernard? I honestly don't know since it doesn't sound much diffrent than the only interview I remember hearing his real voice in and I assumed he was Irish.

reply

Uh..what accent? That is the way he talks...ever see Quiz show?

reply

^ Well, he did have an accent in "Quiz Show". It was supposed to be American, but you can't really tell since he kind of butchered it...

reply

You guys are a riot!

reply

Well clearly you must not know accents very well, but I live Scotland and so its not anywhere near a Scottish accent but does sound like a diluted Northern Irish accent

Acutally, I think Fiennes nailed the accent that Bernard was to have had. His accent was Irish and it would naturally waver in and out from time to time as he lived in both Ireland and American. Bernard moved to the States from Ireland as young boy of eight. As somebody posted, yes, Fiennes is British. Bernard's accent is not an Irish accent from Dublin, but another region of Ireland.

Bernard explains to Doris in one of the scenes in the conservatory that his father passed away when he was three and his mother was killed in a car accident when he was eight years old. After his mum's death, young Bernard left Ireland and moved to America and to be raised by his aunt.

If you live in the U.S.A. from the young age of eight years old on to the age of the adult Bernard, you are going to lose some of your accent, but not altogether. I lived in the south until I was six years old and had a bit of a southern twang when my family and I moved to the west coast. I quickly tried to cover my slight southern accent as I was teased by the other kids for speaking differently!

An accent can sort of come in and out due to anger, drunkedness or just dropping your guard as Bernard did as the relationship between him and Doris deepened.

reply

He's doing an accent from Ulster, Ireland. As someone mentioned, not all accents in Ireland sound like Bono's or Dylan Moran's.

reply

I agree. I started off hating the accent, mainly because he kept slipping into English non-rhotic(sliding over letter r) but he soon settled. Yes it's a soft Northern Irish accent in the Liam Neeson style.
