Has anyone seen all 8 films?

I've seen The Abandoned, Penny Dreadful, The Gravedancers, Unrest, and I'm about to watch Dark Ride. Of the ones I've seen, I liked The Abandoned (I thought it had an original plot and was simply weird enough for me to thoroughly enjoy), Penny Dreadful (just the idea of being locked in a car with no escape is scary enough, let alone being trapped and mentally tortured by an escaped psychopath!), and The Gravedancers, (campy, predictable, badly acted, and perfectly entertaining!). The only one I had a hard time sitting through was Unrest. I tried to watch it twice, but failed both times. I liked the premise, but it just didn't hold my attention, so I ended up watching the beginning and the end both times - bummer. Anyway, I'm wondering which films those who have seen all 8 particularly enjoyed. I know I'll get conflicting answers, and many people won't agree with my tastes, but I'm interested to hear from people who have seen all of them and I'd like to know which films they'd recommend to their friends. Of the ones I've seen, I think I'd definitely recommend The Abandoned to my friends, but it would depend on the friend whether or not I'd recommend Penny Dreadful and The Gravedancers. I would probably recommend Penny Dreadful before The Gravesdancers. While I personally thought The Gravedancers was very good, I have weird tastes when it comes to horror films and I don't think many of my friends would appreciate the humor injected into this one. Your opinions??

Btw, I've posted this question on the board for all 8 films just in case people visit other boards more than this one. Sorry for the repetition, but I'm really interested in everyone's opinion! I know how tough imdb's board can be, but please don't persecute me for it. Thank you!

well so far i have seen dark ride and wicked little things. i like wicked little things allot better then dark ride. ok anyways. i work at wal mart. we only have 7 of the 8 films. the two places that a person can rent films in my town only have 7 . so i would be inturested to know exactly what one we are missing and why we are missing it. mabey somebody out there knows the answer. i do plan of seeing all of them and adding them to my collection. because i rather enjoyed the two i have seen. wicked little things actully almost made me jump. it keep my attention and was actully somewhat suspencfull. dark ride had a surprise in it that i didnt see coming. i started zoning out for a little while but it was still pretty good. but if anybody knows the answer to my question. plz let me know.

The film that is not out yet is The Abandoned. That is because it was later released as a movie in theaters instead of when it was released as an Film to Die For. So I'm guessing it is going to take a bit longer for it to come out. And I've seen 5 of the Films to Die For including Penny Dreadful, Dark Ride, The Abandoned, The Hamiltons, and The Gravedancers. So far I'm not really impressed, nothing that really creeps me out yet. But the scariest I would have to say is The Gravedancers, the Ghosts in the movie are really creepy looking. And the best I would have to say The Hamiltons. It really has a great story and a pretty sick twist.

reply

I totally agree. I've seen 7 out of the 8 films, and besides Penny Dreadful being a tad creepy, The Gravedancers and The Hamiltons are the only movies I would recommend to others. On a side note: my skin only crawled during The Hamiltons when there was a little too much brotherly/sisterly love.

Tim: You're scared of mice and spiders, but oh-so-much greater is your fear that one day the two species will cross-breed to form an all-powerful race of mice-spiders who will immobilize human beings in giant webs in order to steal cheese.

I'm getting there. I believe the only two I haven't seen (but will eventually see are "Reincarnation" and "The Abandoned" My favorite was The Gravedancers. Yes it was campy and a little over the top but it was great fun and had some creepy images. Like you, I just couldn't get into "Unrest". I liked "Wicked Little Things", "Dark Ride", "Penny Dreadful" and "The Hamiltons". I will say that a couple of them would have been like getting golden nugget horror rentals (Those of you into horror know how difficult it is to rent an independent horror film and get something watchable.. or maybe it's just me), but for release in theaters on their own billed as "deemed too disturbing for audiences" just didn't really cut it. None of them were too disturbing for ME!
That being said (yes... contradiction) I thought that Horrorfest was GREAT fun and binging on horror movies at the theatre was awesome. I would do it again and if there's another one I WILL do it again.

No. The only one I've seen so far is Wicked Little Things and that was a major let down. Bad acting on Emma and the mother's part. I liked the plot, but other than that, it was pretty bad. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE horror movies and am a huge fan of blood and guts. But this one just didn't do it for me.

I'm going to try and watch The Hamiltions and Penny Dreadful next, since I hear those are pretty good, I hope. My video store has most of these films available to rent.

(Those of you into horror know how difficult it is to rent an independent horror film and get something watchable.. or maybe it's just me)

Nope, it's not just you. I feel the same way.

I agree, mary123, good horror films are hard to find. I think the one I most recently enjoyed was "Stay Alive". I thought the whole "get killed in the game, die in real life" premise was pretty cool.

reply

Gravedancers was good (monsters were creepy.) Little Things had respectable acting. The Hamiltons was soooo bad. The one about the scary ride was a sci-fi movie of the weak (yes I know how to spell week.) That's all so far.

reply

Hey, My blockbuster has them all but they are always out, I have seen "The hamiltons", which was good, until close to the end, it was not predictabl, and itkeeps your attention, but I was let down. Maybe because I was expecting a bigger climax (when you find out who/what Lenny is, well, at least I waslet down). But, it is a good film, and a great idea, and I have to agree the brother/sister love thing...It doesn't bother me to see it, but it was never explained (I think others will agree, or maybe I missed something) SO DON'T bash me please.

I REALLY want to see Pnny Dreadful and Wickes Little things. I want to see Penny Dreadful because it has Jason Vorhees mother in it (you know who I am talking about). And, I love the box art for Wicked Little Things, and have heard good things about it.

reply

Betsy Palmer (Jason Voorhees mother) is not in this Penny Dreadful. She is in a short film that was made a year earlier and shares the same title.

I would have to say I enjoyed all of the films to a certain degree. I felt Dark Ride and Reincarnation were easily the weakest of the bunch and the best three were Gravedancers, The Abandoned and Wicked Little Things. I was surprised by The Hamiltons as I almost didn't watch it after viewing the trailer. I expected a terrible film but in all honesty it was decent. I was also slightly surprised by Penny Dreadful. The killer is admittedly silly but the film had some creepy moments and good suspense. Unrest was a minor letdown but only after I thought about it for awhile...during the film there is a fair amount of tension, atmosphere and shocking moments. I loved The Abandoned despite the presence of a twist in the second half that has killed many other recent horror films for me. Gravedancers was a fun ride combining horror and humor quite well. Wicked Little Things had its flaws but had much more atmosphere that any recent horror film I've seen.

reply

You were right. I didn't realize it till after I rented the film and notice my error. thank you. Have you seen the short film with Betsy Palmer?

reply

No. It has sparked my interest for some time but other than some film festivals and special events it hasn't been screened much. Since it is only a short (apparently a student film with a slightly higher budget than usual) this isn't uncommon. It has a tentative dvd date of June 26th by a small distributor but I have been unable to confirm this. Supposedly it was supposed to hit dvd some time this spring according to Fangoria. I recently talked with Betsy Palmer at a convention but I forgot to ask if she knew of any release for the film. Guess we will both (and everyone else) have to wait and see...

reply

I saw The Gravedancers, and I loved the 2 ghosts, Emma and Langer, the lil pyro boy was DUMB. I was creeped out by the ghosts they were great.

Reincarnation "Rinne" like all the japanese horror it took a while to get going. But once you go to the twist in the story, I really thought it was a great movie. I am very partial to Asian Horror.

I just watched "Wicked Little Things" Oh those children were not even scary. I think if the children were instructed to walk slower and more like out of it zombies, I think that I could have liked the movie a lot better. I would have like to have seen more scenes in the Carlton Mansion, some more flashbacks, but alas it was what it was.

Unrest, yawn fest... it was all over the place and it explained NOTHING about this woman being possessed or how it possesed the med student, it could have been much scarier. I stopped and started it a lot because it was losing my attention.

The Hamiltons I LOVED, low budget gore and the occult!!!!! I thought to myself early in the movie, are they vampires, but of course falling prey to the folklore about vampires in sunlight, I talked myself out of thinking that. So, when I did figure out they were after all I like that I was tricked.

I have not seen Darl Ride, because NOTHING WITH MEADOW SOPRANO can be that scary. I dont want BIG NAMES in my horror movies.

I am going to watch Penny Dreadful and the Abandoned soon.

After Dark Horror Fest

I have seen these 8 movies and the comments are my critics about the movie and nothing offensive. I respect all the views and critics of the others. Please do not mistake me. Movie is an art and it catches each one by thier own taste. Just sharing my views with you all, thats all.

I have taken the plot from HORRORMOVIEFEST site and not written it on my own as I was afraid that it could turn into SPOILERS and may let out the whole movie going thing out. The Order of the movie list is my rating order too.

THE ABANDONED - Overall 4.5 out of 5
Plot: An American woman searching for her birth parents learns she has inherited a house in the middle of a forest in a remote area of Russia.
Story: 4
Acting: 4
Direction: 4
Special Effects: 4
Atmosphere: 5
Scary: 4

Comment: If you do not get the story line but feel its quite not possible for this to happen, just make sure to say to yourself its only a movie that too a horror genre, and so the plot would be like that. Just sit back and get scared.

THE HAMILTONS - Overall 4 out of 5
PLOT:A picture-perfect American family is always kind, loving and respectful to their neighbors… except that they usually wind up killing them.
Story: 4
Acting: 2
Direction: 4
Special Effects: 3
Atmosphere: 5
Scary: 3

Comment: A well narrated story, with a lot of things that happen as you expect it to happen. Nothing new, no surpirses, maybe a bit at the end.

WICKED LITTLE THINGS - Overall 3.8 out of 5
PLOT:Recently widowed Karen Tunny and her two daughters, Sarah and Emma, move to a remote mountain home which Karen has inherited from the family of her late husband.
Story: 2
Acting: 3
Direction: 3
Special Effects: 2
Atmosphere: 4
Scary: 3

Comment: A middle aged Widow with her 2 daughters in creepy woods at night..what else are you expecting !

REINCARNATION (RINNE) - Overall 3.5 out of 5
PLOT:From the director of "The Grudge" and "The Grudge 2" comes Reincarnation, a suspenseful psychological horror film that deals with the topic of reincarnation.

Story: 3
Acting: 4
Direction: 3
Special Effects: 3
Atmosphere: 2
Scary: 3

Comment: You got have a little bit of patience to get involved with the movie. This is just a crap movie from the Asian Horror Den. There are a lot more better ones, even to say the Best horror flicks from the Asian Directors. This one whould have been choosen just because GRUDGE was a hit - Just an attraction, nothing special.

UNREST - Overall 3 out of 5
PLOT:A med student collapses upon sensing a "presence" about her cadaver. Her fears are strengthened by a mysterious death. She must find out the truth behind before its angered spirit can wreak further vengeance.
Story: 2
Acting: 1
Direction: 3
Special Effects: 5
Atmosphere: 5
Scary: 3

Comment: What a creepy atmosphere - The mortuary ! Basically, I felt the idea was nice, but they could have included many scary stuff in the movie and make it really a AHHH! movie. But they stuck on to it more decently. Many parts where you expect something to happen, nothing really happens, and its like that the whole movie.

PENNY DREADFUL - Overall 3 out of 5
PLOT:Young Penny goes on a retreat with her psychologist. The intention is to help her overcome her phobia of cars. But events find her in a nightmarish situation where her worst fears come true.
Story: 1
Acting: 2
Direction: 2
Special Effects: 2
Atmosphere: 4
Scary: 3

Comment: Hitcher conforting 2 women in the night between the woods. Expected a lot of running and screaming, but it was all done in a closed car. The thought of being caught in such a suituation is creepy but not the movie, expect for music poping up now and then.

THE GRAVEDANCERS - Overall 3 out of 5
PLOT:A group of friends' lives are invaded by a trio of hostile ghosts after they engage in a drunken bout of gravedancing during a wake for an old chum.
Story: 1
Acting: 1
Direction: 1
Special Effects: 2
Atmosphere: 1
Scary: 2

Comment: I do not want to be harsh with this movie as I felt it a little bit too much because I know there will be others who would have enjoyed it. There are 2 scenes in the movie: 1. In the Hospital and 2. In the bedroom, which are the main high light of the movie, the rest BOOF!

DARK RIDE - Overall 3 out of 5
PLOT:Ten years after he brutally murdered two girls, a killer escapes from a mental institution and returns to his turf, the theme park attraction called "Dark Ride".
Story: 1
Acting: 2
Direction: 2
Special Effects: 2
Atmosphere: 1
Scary: 1

Comment: No surpirses! What you want to happen exactly happens. Nothing New, not even the murders. Just sit back and enjoy the blood splashing out everywhere and of course a lot of screming just like in Teen Horror Flicks.

I respect your comments.

i watched pennydreadful, the gravedancers, unrest, dark ride, the hamiltons, and wicked little things. i liked all of them. i mean im a horror movie fan and these movies arent the cheap little b movies that come out on video. they dont make horror movies like they used to. nowadays its all remakes of classics and like really really cheap. like pennydreadful i thought was great. that movie freaked me out. the gravedancers i thought it was an awesome story line. unrest was just freaky. dark ride was cool. the hamiltons was interesting and wicked little things was awesome, but a little to original. but all in all very well made movies. i didnt watch reincarnation because im not one for subtitles but it looked cool also.
