Mary's long hair?

Didn't working children have short hair? I know they did in factories (so it wouldn't get caught in the machinery), which doesn't necessarily apply to mine children. But wouldn't it have been more practical for Mary to have short hair, or at least tie it back so it doesn't get in the way?

That's true, good point.

I agree. However, it could be explained away that she just recently started working for the mine. She was very young and even though in those days they had little qualms about putting small children to work, they may have not accepted her until she was a certain age for practical purposes. For example, a five year old might follow orders better than a three year old. Anyway, she may have just started working there and the parents hadn't gotten around to cutting her hair off yet.

Just a possible explanation, in truth I don't know and if it had been my decision I would have advocated having shorter hair as well.

Because a little girl with long blonde hair looks more innocent and angelic than a kid with cropped hair. It's movie magic. Nothing to do with reality.

And it draws a parallel with Emma.
