it was a different time and a different place. I wouldn't be surprised if the Jim Crow segregation still had a tight hold in some areas of the South back at that time, as well as the racist attitudes. Nowadays, University of Texas Austin and Austin in general, is considered to be one of the more liberal areas in Texas.

Still, I must admit that I was a conflicted during that 1960 Cotton Bowl clip in the movie. For one thing, I live in Austin now, and Longhorns is big around here. The cannon firing thing is still part of the tradition at Longhorn games. Yet, I used to go to college outside of Syracuse, NY, where we used to root for the Syracuse Orangemen. I have to say that during that clip of the football match, I was cheering on the Orangemen.

From another thread, it is interesting to note that fight on the field during the Cotton Bowl did actually happen.
