I am not versed in the Syracuse mascot of the day as I was not yet born, but considering that their nickname was "Orangemen" until very recently it doesn't seem a stretch to think that they had such a mascot circa late 50's-early 60's
"Orangemen" are not Indians. It is a reference to the supporters of William of Orange.
In terms of other Indian Mascots, North Dakota University are the Fighting Sioux, and Florida State University are the Seminoles. FSU has an "Indian" named Chief Osceola who rides to the center of the football field before every game on a Appaloosa stallion and throws a flaming spear in to the ground. The bland plays the Seminole War Chant through most of the game, and fans chant along and display the tomahawk chop arm symbol at appropriate times as well. If you are a fan of Indian themed sports imagery, an FSU football game is a must see event. Also have extremely attractive coeds and usually a pretty good team too.
