Indian Mascot??

I don't know why but this film keeps showing Indian Mascots. I noticed it at the Syracuse vs Kansas game and also there was a flash of an indian mascot at the beginning of the Texas Longhorn game. The only Indian mascot for a college football I know of is Chief Illiniwek of Illinois. My knowledge of college ball is extremely limited...anyone know why? Did a lot of college teams have indian mascots during/before the civil rights era?

I am not versed in the Syracuse mascot of the day as I was not yet born, but considering that their nickname was "Orangemen" until very recently it doesn't seem a stretch to think that they had such a mascot circa late 50's-early 60's.

reply

They were the Orangemen, but the mascot was The Saltine Warrior, aka Bill Orange. The statue they show of an Indian shooting an arrow into the sky is a real statue on the SU campus.

this is because some of the scenes were shot at Lane Tech College Prep, in Chicago, their mascot are the indians.

"Orangemen" are not Indians. It is a reference to the supporters of William of Orange.

In terms of other Indian Mascots, North Dakota University are the Fighting Sioux, and Florida State University are the Seminoles. FSU has an "Indian" named Chief Osceola who rides to the center of the football field before every game on a Appaloosa stallion and throws a flaming spear in to the ground. The bland plays the Seminole War Chant through most of the game, and fans chant along and display the tomahawk chop arm symbol at appropriate times as well. If you are a fan of Indian themed sports imagery, an FSU football game is a must see event. Also have extremely attractive coeds and usually a pretty good team too.

The Indian Mascot was indeed called the Saltine Warrior and as someone who froze many a cold Saturday afternoon at Archbold Stadium, I remember him well. The first football memories I have are of Coach Schwarzwalders last few years, when we were 3-8 and 2-9 and were on a real downward spiral that would continue thru the Frank Maloney years until Dick MacPherson took over..but I digress. The Saltine Warrior was our mascot until the late 70s and then we had a couple of others until Otto the Orange came around.

Seriously? The only Indian mascot you know of is Chief Illiniwek?
What about Chief Osceola of the Florida State Seminoles? Not only is he the greatest mascot in college football--riding bareback on an Appaloosa stallion and throwing a flaming spear into midfield--he was also a baddass human being in real life.

The University of Oklahoma had an Indian mascot called Little Red until the NCAA put the pressure on the schools to drop the Indian mascots.
