We thought the same thing BUT I later remembered she was a writer who had visited multiple crime scenes with grisly murders, maybe she was desensitized?
My problem with the movie was it was like there had been two plots, one about a ghost, one about the crazy creepy guy in the basement (Maybe her son a product of the rape Mary endured) and they kinda squished them together.
And the locket with the mirror, that should have played into the end of the movie but it was pretty much forgotten.
