I would have preferred it if they went with the serial killer version...

...Rather than making out she was set up by political enemies. Still, hopefully it will be a classy film anyway. Can't wait to see it!

You are absolutely right with thread title. Sadly, Bathory is not a classy film, more like crappy one.

Research indicates that she was set up. There is no evidence whatsoever that her servants were killed in the way that it's claimed. Hungarian nobility was allowed to torture their servants with immunity. The fact she was more wealthy then the king of Hungary and was a widow made her an easy target.

What about the journal, does that still exist? If so, it could be compared with contemporary document to see if it's a fake or not.

yeah, from the description it sounds more like one of these female-empowerment movies, but there are suprisingly few movies about rulers brutally opressing their subjects, and even fewer from the perspective of said rulers.

So based on your post, am I to assume that there is no mass torture of subjects by her in this movie?

I haven't seen it yet, I only knew it existed from seeing a movie poster on holiday in Prague. I must try ebay! I saw a trailer on youtube and it looks like they're portraying her as an Elizabeth I type of figure, harsh to the point of brutal at times but also heroic and dedicated to her country.

There is a version of the her story directed by actress Julie Delpy that goes with a vision of Bathory as an incredibly vain woman who is going through aging issues, and indeed stays true to the version of Bathory as serial killer. It is called The Countess, from 2009.

Why? When the truth could be either version, or yet another version altogether?
