Caravaggio

Is it true that the Countess of Bathory had this long standing affair with the painter Caravaggio?

The Caravaggio link is nonsense.

The Daily Telegraph of 29 June 2008 says the following of the Countess: "In his film Jakubisko has her cavorting with the Italian Painter Caravaggio, but this is pure invention."

Okay, thanks for the info. Adding the whole 'Caravaggio storyline' certainly added an interesting layer to this film, but they shouldn't change history in these films, because people tend to believe what they see. Period movies should educate as well as entertain.

The sad thing is that people tend to believe what they see in a film like this, without doing the research. So they com away with all this misinformation and warped view of history. I wish the creators of this nonsense would realize that they have a responsibility. If they are creating fiction from history, there should be some disclaimer at the beginning to announce it.

I agree. It was an interesting part of the film but since it isn't true they shouldn't have added it.

As a huge fan of Caravaggio's art, i was really excited to learn these facts about him from this film! i had no idea that he was at all involved with the infamous Countess of Bathory. Then when I found out it was completely fabricated i felt a bit offended, like someone played a trick on me. This remains a nice film, with some gorgeous cinematography, but the Caravaggio references were just a bad idea.
