Here's the straight answer: First of all, there was no fire in the litteral sense. The movie title is a figure of speech, meaning that the characters come to each other with "baggage" (so to speak) and have suffered losses in their life...

Actually Halle Berry's character mentioned there being a fire in their garage.

yeah, there was definitely a fire in a very literal sense. the title also works on a figurative (and might i add not too subtly) way, but that doesnt change the fact that the fire happened. Jerry is living in the garage that was remodeled after the fire.

BTW, I'm pretty sure the OP was joking.
