I mean....what studio would go ahead and put this melodramatic dribble out for public consumption.....as a major release, no less????

It was a slow mess, I'd have to agree (it was another one of those films that could not decide whether it was a drama or comedy, but, unlike the television program MASH, never did find the right way to balance both) - the only part which made sense was the ending, when he realized that his obsession could have easily meant never seeing his family again (when he had an electrical problem in orbit - and seeing his wedding ring float out from behind the panel), and his eagerness to go to dinner with his family after his return to Earth - now that made sense, since being a loved husband and father should be enough for any man, and in the end he seemed to realize that...
the dialogue was awful, and it seemed all the actors except the kids mailed it in.
Billy Bob's face(especially his carefully plucked eyebrows and reptilian cold dead eyes) exudes
too much doucheness, and him playing the role of a "dreamer" is not convincing at all.
