pitch: The Indianapolis Quint prequel

I think it's pretty safe to go back into the water.

The trauma that presumably turned a good young man into the
man we know as Quint in Jaws would be terrifying.

I don't know if he once lived with his parents in Amity, in 1945,
and whether his father was killed in battle and young Jonas Quint was
called for another special tour of his own. . .delivering the bomb
with the crew of the Indianapolis.

Having so many guys in the water for a suspended amount of time
has build in suspense and terror. Naturally the abomination of their
mission lends a level to the man-versus-nature theme.
Herbie Robinson from Cleveland is the obvious side-kick
and his fate would be gut wrenching to see.

With hiss relationship to Spielberg and his fondness for re-makes
Michael Bay might be the only director willing to step into
Spielberg's shadow after history has judged the other follow-ups.
If Spielberg was involved as a producer or something it might be interesting.

I just imagine that poster. A sunken U.S.S. Indianapolis at the
bottom with a school of various sizes of Jaws logos swimming in
from many directions. Maybe a severed pair of legs falling into view.

I think I'd even be afraid to risk my nerves sitting through
that much tension.
And the thread that holds it together is that we know Quint
survives but we track his personality. Maybe when he gets
back home he's not the same man. Maybe he was reported MIA
and his mom had a heart attack while he was gone so he sells
the house and buys the Orca to live on.

What do you think? Would it be a hit?

great Idea,
as Quint is my alltime favorite character all-time I would DIE to see this prequel!

I agree. Someone should make this movie.

His character's fate is all the more fascinating and ironic because, like it's been mentioned in some discussions on the IMDB Jaws board, Quint has been involved in "delivering the bomb" on two separate missions involving sharks: once as a young crew member of the Indy and then again, almost three decades later, as a seasoned veteran and captain of the Orca, when Brody uses Quint's rifle to fire at the air tank clamped between the shark's jaws, an air tank/bomb that was being transported by the Orca as part of Hooper's gear. Brody completes Quint and the Orca's mission.

A film about the Indianapolis was already made starring Stacy Keach (Voyage of the Shark IIRC).

A film that starts with the ship and then follows Quint's life post WW 2 might be interesting. The sinking could be left to the end where it is shown as a flashback that explains Quint's trauma.

The biggest challenge would be finding an actor that would come anywhere near as good as Robert Shaw to play young Quint.
