I'm Asian and I thought this movie was retarted as Hell!!

Seriously, the main lead was hideous and they tried to potray him as this confident, successful, witty and cool asian dude!!

reply

the only retard is you. funny as *beep* that you spelled retarded wrong.

reply

The main lead was a average looking asian guy.
They never portrayed him as confident, nor successful, nor cool.
He cried at night before going to sleep. His dad had to send him money every month because he couldn't get a job.
The movie just portrayed him as a very sarcastic and cynical guy with a witty mouth who had some issues. He came off as a *beep* sometimes. But in the end, he cleans up his act a little bit.

and just to point out, you don't have to be good looking to be confident, successful, witty, or cool. Those are all qualities that has nothing to do with your outer looks...

Agreed with previous poster. The first part of the movie led you to think he was pathetic. That meant Ken Leung was acting very well, then the second half or whenever things started working out for him - that was when things changed. So basically his good portrayal, acting, and the script did it's job and the original poster just didn't realize it or get it. Go see his roles in other movies and you'll see your analysis is incorrect.

The topic creator is probably not even Asian - just some non-Asian feeling anxious that Asian men are being portrayed in a non-stereotypical or embarrassing manner

reply

you seems pretty retarded to me. If you were really asian, you should have supported all asian movie made in hollywood!

reply

Um...right, all Asians HAVE TO support all movies with Asian Americans in Hollywood.

I, for a fact, know a half Vietnamese/half Chinese AA who thinks that all AA actors are bad actors and thinks they should stop trying. There's less support for AA actors from the AA community than one might think.

------Michael Westen is a spy !-----

reply

i agree with you, as Asians, it's nice to show support for Asian actors, but it shouldn't be obligatory...

... but then your second argument is completely illogical. Do you realize how stupid that sounds? That statement is about as contrived, absolute, and moronic as it can get. I didn't realize that one half-vietnamese half-chinese person made up the entire Asian American community.

reply

I also think the film is retarded. Sure thing the director had good intention wanting to make the film with a chinese lead to promote asian actors in hollywood. but what the hell? the story is bad, portraying asians in the wrong way.. well chinese girls are portrayed as sluts and dumb, falling for stupid clinchee dialogue from the male lead.

The film started off quite well, playing with notions of chinese- american identity. but i think it went on the wrong way, making asian actors play cliches and not deverging away from asians' Hoolywood image as being submissive, not well spoken and fcking insecured. I think the film should have been well off not being made at all..

and if people want to see strong male asian characters, they should watch TOny Leung play in WKY movies... this is what I call strong acting and well developped character worthy of talented actors in Hollywood.

reply

Yeah what we really need is another Asian actor to show up with a thick Asian accent.

One reason a lot of Americans are surprised when they meet American-born Asians is the fact that we don't have accents. It jars with what Hollywood's been shoving down their throats with the "so sowwyy" types. And hiring HK/Japanese/Taiwanese actors just confirms many Americans feelings that we all speak like that.

That we'll always be outsiders.

reply

Wtong, americans are well aware that there are asians who grew up in the us and speak better english than they do. If they dont, then its a reflection of their own ignorance and uncultured upbringing
