have 5 siblings?

You make a really point here. Some of the other people on this board who saw the DVD with the special features (I saw it online) say there was an alternative ending where the girl was in league with the gangster boyfriend the whole time and conned the protagonist out of his apartment with her made-up sob story. In that case the 5 siblings would of course have been fictitious. The director decided not to go with this ending. But you're right -- it's an impossible inconsistency, whichever way the story goes. The hero ought to have caught it, or at least the director ought to have, and modified the script.

Considering the fact that Kelly Hu is born in 1968 and the one child policy began in 1980 it is not that unrealistic. There are also exceptions of the one child policy.

You make a good point except that the One Child Policy wouldn't apply to Kelly Hu since she's American born, unless you meant her character in this film.

People do hide that they have more kids. But if you get caught then the punishment won't be fun. China is corrupt as hell. So if you have connections then you can do what you want. Her fiancee was a gangster so if you pay off police, government officials they might overlook it.

There are loop holes around the one child policy, they cannot stop you from giving birth outside China, back in 90's you could have a child in HK and then go back to China with your new child.
