At the end, where Esther sent the letter to her parents about the braces, and her mother said "I guess that means our mailbox is working again" (Esther had previously been saying it was broken), was that meant to show that her mother actually had been listening and paying attention?

shareShe was a Snob. She wanted an "elite" and perfection loving family. And the children were treated as adults with no room for exploring.
And i guess after Esther told her "That a dead Stripper would be a better mother as her" and when Esther fall off the stage she'd come back to her senses and realised what she was (A SNOB). And in order to prove that Esther was wrong this time (for not caring etc.) she said "the Mailbox is working again".
