What is it like to be Jewish in Australia?

As soon as I read the description of "Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger" on the DVD box I wanted to rent the film. I've never seen an Australian movie about Jewish people.

I liked the movie but I agree many other films have covered the same ground about trying to become an adult and trying to be accepted. It didn't say very much about being Jewish - several other films I've seen have suggested much more about Australian society.

I just wanted to ask people about what is it like to be Jewish in Australia. Are there many Jewish schools in Australia?

I'm Canadian and studying in Sydney and I can give you sense of what the Jewish community is like here.
Sydney has about 40-50,000 Jews.Melbourne actually has a larger Jewish community. It is a much more tighly-knit community than say a major North American city like New York or Toronto. No conservative branch exists, really. Just Orthodox and Reform. There are lots of events for Jews in their 20s and 30s. Chabad has a strong presence here too. There are many synagogues here and surprisingly, there are at least 3 Jewish High Schools (I say surprinsgly because Toronto, where I'm from, which has one of the biggest Jewish populations in North America, only has 2. South Africans make up a very large portion of the community. From what I can gather, some Jews in their 20s feel somewhat detached from the "hub" of the Jewish community of North America. For example, birthright is much larger commitment here than in North America - you must go for 3 or 6 weeks and you must pay half. And some of the organizations/movements that are present in North America are lacking in Australia. There are no Jewish camps here. Hillel does not have the same role here as it does on North American universities. What there is is AUJS (Australian Union of Jewish Students) which is less formal than Hillel. Hope this gives you a sense of what it is like here. This has been an interesting discovery for me too.

Thanks very much! I'm American and I've been living in the UK for 15 years. It's very interesting to hear what the Australian Jewish community is like. I'm from a Miami and I grew up in a large Jewish community; my family was conservative.

I've never seen an Australian movie about Jewish people.

You might also consider Jewboy ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0439646/ ) for something a little bleaker.

EDIT: And yeah, the Melbourne Jewish community has been particularly substantial since the gold rush. I see that it still has the highest number, per capita, of holocaust survivors of any city outside Israel, for example.

I suppose on a clear day you can see the class struggle from here.
