This gets hard bits right but easy bits wrong!

This film was such a disappointment. It starts off so well - interesting well acted characters, funny, interesting context (Jewish family in Australia) and good dialogue. But it just can't maintain a coherent storyline.

Esther and her brother are so likeable at the start but then they suddenly turn nasty. After Esther beats up Slug for the raincoat, I expected her to realise her wrongdoing and for this to be a turning point. She tries to apologise to Slug and I feel like it's going to move forward from there, but instead Esther just discovers that she's now a big star at her old private school and goes back there to join the 'mean girls'.

Her friendship with Sonny is never developed, nor is Sonny's relationship with her mother. The mum could've been an interesting character but she only makes a couple of brief appearances.

Esther's brother stabs his best friend in the hand with a compass (for no apparent reason) and then lies to his parents to get out of it. Esther declares this is "genius" and that's all we hear about that.

The end is just totally random. Esther's Blueburger word play (which was funny and fitting the first time she does it) is re-hashed. It's presented like some poignant moment but it isn't! Then suddenly Esther and Sonny are both back in public school. We leave Esther not knowing anything about how she has grown from her experiences. Her brother has become religious but does he repent his sins? No idea.
