Will, (Sisto) is the personification of the addiction to the drug.
"Girlfriend or hostage."
get it?

reply

Oh, that makes sense. Thank you!

While this certainly wasn't the best movie in the world it had a great message.
Yes, Will was an embodiment of Hope's addiction but he was also a possible outcome for her future as were the people on the customer side of the diner. She could have had any of their stories in her future...The guys killing time waiting for drugs, the singer/songwriter on her way, the madame and prostitute, the drugged up girl who was with guys she didn't really want to be with, the producer and director that were in the genesis of making a movie, the crazy woman at the end of the counter. The people working at the diner are a representation of her current state. They performed their function with nary a peep as to their feelings about their condition with the exception of Thomas who was a representation of the direction in which Hope needed to go.

Thanks for all the explanations. I was one of the "huh" people.
After reading some posts, I understand more.
I also noticed (like the tatoos, appearing, disapearing) that in the first
shot on the beach, the beauty mark is one one side of her cleavage, and in
the shot where she is unbuttoning the brown shirt, it is on the other. I
think is moved around between sides, but only remember those two.

This is yet another thinking film... you have to just watch it unravel... then think back about everything you saw and analyze. Maybe a second viewing to bing the truths you discern into focus.
