Was Hope Auditioning for 'Survivor'?

Hey it isn't so goofy as it sounds. In the beginning of the movie she was playing her guitar and talking to a video camera she set up in her living room. She mentions 'one million dollars'. You have to send in a tape to audition for the show Survivor.

And the title of the show "Survivor" was what the movie was about, whether she would be a survivor of addiction and abuse.

She was auditioning for American Idol.

That makes more sense. I am a fan of Survivor but not of American Idol so that is why I thought of that first. Thanks.

Sad that all you guys can relate to is 'Survivor' and 'American Idol'....

I am 52 years old, I work full-time as an accountant in a management firm. I own a home with my husband of 15 years. I have had eye surgery for glaucoma in the past year. My mom has cancer. I need something to lighten my mind from serious things in my life.

What was that you were saying about me being sad because all I can relate to is American Idol and Survivor?

Hello DanaShelbyChancey...
People LOVE to sum you up and make accusations like that. Just ignore it. Its just internet BS.

Thank you, sub. I appreciate that, you are nice.

I really should know this by now, on the 'net. It can be hurtful if they strike at the wrong time.

Sigh....Pitty about the glaucoma and your mom having cancer. I really feel for you on those points. HOWEVER, that still does not change the fact that you had to pick two of the biggest "non-thinking" programs to relate to this "thinking" film. 'American Idol' is nothing but a populatity contest. I know twits that spend hours voting over and over for who they want to win. If they wanted to make it a real contest this practice would not be able to occur. 'Survivor' is just plain pathetic and a waste of time...Sorry but thats how I see it. If you want to take my post as a personal attack so that you can garner sympathy then more power to you.....

Why is there always some self-righteous pseudo-intellectual, and in this case one who cannot spell, on every message board for the sole purpose of picking other people apart. Newsflash! That delusional belief that you hold, of your intellectual superiority to these people, is simply a distorted machination of overinflated arrogance and rampant narcissism. Did it occur to you, that you missed his point entirely? Let me lay it out for you, since you seem to be the only real "twit" here. Some people's lives are REAL, they have REAL things to THINK about, things more important than television. They spend so much time THINKING about their reality, that when they have a moment to watch television, they don't want to have to THINK. It's called ESCAPISM. It's a concept that a lot of film and television revolve around. It's like a pressure valve to releases the stress, something light and noncommittal, because believe it or not, not every show or film needs to be an academic examination, since not every viewer is looking for that. These people don't want or need your "pity" (the correct spelling), because despite some negatives in their lives, they're mature and know they have to take the bad with the good. They wouldn't trade one bad minute of their lives with you, someone whose life is so boring and meaningless he/she has nothing better to do than rip them apart. In shorthand "Get a life, loser!"

From Mermaidbronze - "Why is there always some self-righteous pseudo-intellectual, and in this case one who cannot spell, on every message board for the sole purpose of picking other people apart." (While we're being petty, this should have ended with a question mark not a period.)

Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black. As for misspelling 'pity', I hadn't noticed it but certainly know how to spell it. If that is your big testament to what a bad guy I am then I pity those around you and hope that they spell check every time that they type something.

As for the "self-righteous pseudo-intellectual" comment, I suppose it occurred to you that THERE WAS NO AUDITION! She lied! That is why I thought it sad that this is what she had related to. The point had been missed entirely. Again, the pot calling the kettle black.

I never belittled this person personally. I merely stated what I thought about the need to relate this movie to something like 'Survivor'. She then went on to extol the woes of her life as if we all don't have our own and equally tragic lives. At no time did I attack her. I stated in my second post that I felt pity for the things that had happened in her life, stated my opinion of the TV shows mentioned and reinforced the fact that they could not be any farther from the nature and theme of this movie.

Again from Mermaidbronze - "These people don't want or need your "pity" (the correct spelling), because despite some negatives in their lives, they're mature and know they have to take the bad with the good. They wouldn't trade one bad minute of their lives with you, someone whose life is so boring and meaningless he/she has nothing better to do than rip them apart. In shorthand "Get a life, loser!"

The mature thing would be to realize that opinions differ and agree to disagree. I could have just as easily went on to say that my mother just died from diabetes but what does THAT have to do with my opinion of what people missed in or about this movie? NOTHING!

Yes, some entertainment is about escapism but this movie had so much to say and was clearly NOT about audience escapism. It was a movie that had lessons to teach, messages to deliver and you were supposed to pay attention to. In essence, the complete opposite of an escapist show such as 'Survivor' and it's like. THAT was my point and again....It is my right to state that opinion and I can argue the case without having to use my dead mother, any of the other tragedies that have happened to me or personally attacking anyone.

The hypocrisy of your statement, "Someone whose life is so boring and meaningless he/she has nothing better to do than rip them apart.”. is so clearly evident that I am sure you had noticed it at some point. You simply DID NOT CARE! At NO time did I personally attack this person and I haven't you either. TRULY intelligent people can argue a point WITHOUT personally attacking a person as you so clearly meant to do to me.

I'm HAPPY that people enjoy things like 'Survivor' and 'American Idol'. More power to them. They are just as entitled to do so as I am to think these shows are stupid. My point is and will always be that THIS MOVIE HAD NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH 'SURVIVOR'.....

As for YOU calling ME a loser....Again with the pot calling the kettle black theory...

I don't think they have a problem with your opinion, so much as the way you expressed it. In your first comment you did come off as patronizing. No one needs to attack anyone else. You could have expressed your positive feelings about this film on a different board. If the only thing you wanted to do was express your appreciation you would talked about the film. You didn't. You condescended to someone who was just asking a question. It was unnecessary. Don't pretend you're innocent, because your opinion wasn't really appropriate for the topic of this board. Just please think about how your words may be construed before you write. You make very good points about the movie but there are plenty of other boards where your words would have been welcomed.

Disgusting loser.

It's a sad thing that your adventures have ended here

reply

Yes, those are the only two shows I can relate to. Why do people have to always say insulting things on here. Why don't you tell us what show she was auditioning for?
