Just Annoying. Not Just The Movie, I Mean The Character

Some things travel across the sea. Some don't. There something about being an obnoxious prat and acting like it's still the 90's that must be comedy gold for Brits. That's the only way I can understand Alan Partridge. It must be an acquired taste... like Borat... that doesn't translate.

I've seen Steve Coogan in other things and he seems talented and not like Alan at all. But this whole chatacter--the basis of his career--I just don't get at all.

I wouldn't really expect it to translate to America. He's such a caricature of a certain type of English middle class person, you really have to know that attitude and the country to get it. But he's easily one of the best, most detailed, fleshed out comedy characters I've ever come across. When the character clicks it just gets better and better. The type of cars he drives, the newspapers he reads, the music he listens to. It's all thought out to perfection. So much of the comedy is in those little details.

Oh I -get- it. I agree it's -very- realistic. -Too- realistic. I just can't sympathise with him. He just repulses me. Seriously. I can't laugh about it.

Speaking as an American, I give up on the lot of them.

If you don't find a Geordie *beep* in a box funny, then you are the problem lad.

'Like Borat it doesn't translate'

Borat made 219 million world wide, I'd say it translated pretty well

reply

Oh well. I like that Alan Partridge is just ours. "back of the net!!"

reply

Borat made hundreds of millions of dollars 'across the pond' so I don't think you can use that as an example of things not translating.

Just because you don't get it, doesn't mean others didn't. My sister in law is from Ohio and she found Alpha Papa hysterical.

I suppose it's reruns of King of Queens for you

If you don't find Alan funny, that's fine. He's not for everyone. I'm Canadian (since everyone is mentioning where they're from; but I know it doesn't matter) and I find Steve's work as Alan incredible.

That's the thing about Alan, is that he's VERY behind on the times. Even when I'm Alan Partridge was airing in the late 90's, he was still stuck in the 70's.

But in the end, you can't just list reasons why you love someone and expect someone to agree. You either love the character or you don't. You have you watched his television programming? Monkey Tennis would have been a hit if Alan had just gotten that second series!
