This show is Innacurate.
SR-71 pilots are wearing normal flight suits, but a real SR-71 pilot wears an astronaut's flight suit.
The Gov. would use a less expensive jet.

and one with a sturdier fuel-storage system

Hey, I'm one of the VFX Artists that worked on it. (Massive / Realflow).
We discussed all of this but as they were going for a more fun, campy feel, we took artistic license. Notice that half the twisters in the film are rotating the wrong direction? ;) (the majority of all twisters in North America spin counter-clockwise if you're looking down at them.
Besides, post again after night two with your thoughts ;). Seriously though, it's supposed to be a fun movie, not something that aimed to be 100% accurate or historically factual ;).

Because it's perfectly normal to have hurricanes in the fall/winter with temp. in the high 70's. You're pathetic.
shareAnd also, innacurate is actually spelled inaccurate ;).
With regards to the fuel storage leakage at takeoff, we discussed doing something with it but with hardly any time (we just wrapped night 2 about 9 hours ago - with regards to VFX) we settled with our brilliant lighting/texture guru to paint spill lines on the SR-71 just like the real ones develop.

Cool! I'll be sure to look for that.
shareNo to mention that an SR71 would have no trouble with 400 knots of headwind.
shareIt also flies above 80,000 feet and doesn't turn like a fighter jet. A YF-12 would actually be a pretty good choice for dropping things into a big storm because it could fly high above the storm (which typically peaks at 40-60,000 feet) and launch sensors from the missile bays; but that wouldn't look anywhere near as exciting.
There's pretty much no sane reason for using an SR-71 for anything which doesn't require flying very high and very fast in a straight line. If you're just flying into a storm at low altitude then a normal fighter jet would be much better choice.
Fortunately I don't think anyone expected this movie would be anything but stupid.
Compared to Absolute Zero, this movie is right on the money.
