Timothy Hutton's Character Wearing ballcap??? HELP Please

Why is he wearing the ballcap at work throughout the entire movie? I believe he was an architect and most professionals do not wear ballcaps in the office IMHO. Am I wrong believing him to be an architect? It seems there is a discussion with a coworker where they discuss his troubles surrounding a job he did before he actually received his license.

I thought that he would eventually remove the cap to reveal some hideous scar that was a result of the "accident" . Hutton's character makes reference to "the accident" when he is on his buddy's deck.
