I was at the berlin premiere too and i was completely speechless by the great, great performances of stone, tim hutton (especially!!), baker and vince. great cast, great existentialist movie, very real in terms of the topic: loneliness that can hit you when living in a village for decades. the boredom and the nothingness that comes with it, is excellently and extensively portrayed, which probably caused the reaction of many to think that the movie itself is boring...there is simply nothing going on in their lives, because it is ruled by their fear exclusively, their fear of experiencing new things, dive into new worlds. that's all. and that is, as i said, depicted in an incredibly intense and unique way. but yes, this movie is certainly not for a mainstream audience, which i think is a good thing too. only thing i can say as to the screening in berlin is, that tim hutton received a long lasting applause right after the scene, when he speaks that long monologue onto his wife's answering machine. second thing, it caused an immense amount of emotion in me, as I could not stop crying for like half an hour after the movie. but yeah it is definitely a film that you either like or dislike completely. i can recommend it to all tim hutton and indiefilm lovers though.
cheers,
katrin.
